My CD writer program converted all my mp3's to VBscripts, how do I change them back?

I am using Roxio easy CD creater platinum 5.1. Somehow when my son was burning a cd he accidently converted all my mp3’s to vbscripts. I wasn’t too worried cause it just made copies of all the existing mp3’s and I just deleted those. Now it is converting all mp3’s to vbs as they are written and I can’t seem to find an option for converting them back.

I thought there must be a bug in the software so I deleted it and will install another cd writer program. I have about 4 or 5 of them.

My problem now is how do I get the songs that I have only in vbscript converted to mp3 format. Or do I need to start over again with them?

Methinks you have a virus.

Typing “MP3 to VBS” into Google, I came up with the following:

http://www.pchell.com/virus/loveletter.shtml

Essentially, it changes all *.mp3 files into VBS files, therefore, if you had an MP3 named “Dancing Queen.MP3”, it would be renamed by the virus to “Dancing Queen.mp3.vbs”

Is this what’s happening? If so, run your virus scan immediately.

Yup, I agree with Rico - “virus” was the first thought I had when I read the title of the thread.

I’m also wondering if you perhaps deleted the real MP3 files, while leaving the copies of the virus intact on your system (I’m guessing yes).

Might also want to check with your friends in your Contacts list to see if you’ve spammed them with the virus without knowing it - if you use affected mail programs, that is.

Since this is a question with a factual answer, I’ll move it to General Questions for you.

It’s a virus (I Love You did this, but it could be others), and there’s nothing you can do to fix it. If you look, all the files probably have the same file size.

Your MP3s are lost.

Ooooh boy do I feel stooopid. I’m running Norton 2002 and since it hadn’t picked it up, I didn’t even think virus. I was thinking problem with the cdr program.

So I reinstalled Norton and updated virus definitions and immediately it came up with “love letter”. It’s still running and out of 26,000 files scanned so far about 5,000 are infected. And it’s not even done with temporary internet files yet or even started on drive D where most of the mp3’s–about 2,000 are stored.

Outlook express is clean though, so at least I haven’t sent it to someone via e mail (I hope)

The likely culprit seems to be a file somehow DL’d on Kazaa that is titled "lyrics to Roxette’s, I’m Sorry, so sorry " I knew there was a reason I hated Roxette.

Grumble grumble People who create viruses should be tortured very very slowly. I just hope Norton will be able to repair most of it.

I have two hard drives. If I keep the music and the jukebox on the smaller disc apart from the one with all the programs and documents will there be less chance it will infect all the program files, etc. in the future?

There’s a bit of delicious irony. You were stealing music and got a virus that invalidated the mp3 files. For some reason, I don’t feel sorry for you.

evilhanz, it is as presumptous of you to assume that I am stealing music as it would be for me to assume that you always act like a a jackass. Perhaps you just saw your chance to get a dig in and went for it before you had time to engage your brain. Do you feel better? Did it make you feel righteous?

For the record, I usually download music that I have already purchased in another form such as vinyl, cassette or CD’s that have been lost or damaged. I also like to put my cd’s on my computer so that I can create mix discs.

All my music, pictures, documents, have been destroyed (8,986 files to be exact), some of the things have been backed up to disc but there are many things that can never recovered. My heart is broken and you have the nerve to contribute your pithy little comment to the effect that it serves me right. Your comment is neither warranted, appreciated or relevant.

I hope someday you get a virus that destroys all your personal files. It would serve you right.

And, for the record, that is stealing. Stop using self-righteousness as an excuse to cheat artists out of their legitimate royalties.

Sorry that your stolen material is lost. Gee, what a shame that you’ll have to steal more of it. Let’s have a pity party.

And I hope someday you have something of yours stolen, only to hear the thief tell you they have the right to take it.

I may get a virus, but I’m not stupid enough to download from KaZaa and not bother to update my antivirus software. Loveletter has been around for a couple of years, and if you weren’t protected, you’re a fool.

Alright, not in this forum!

The question has been answered, so I’m going to do a favor for The Mermaid a favor and close this.
