My Coke vs. Pepsi test

Diet Coke is a great mixer for middle of the road whiskey.

Something about the blend of blends.
Coke Zero is a good tasting cola. My first choice, if available.

As stated above Coke Zero most definitely has caffeine. Cola without caffeine isn’t cola (it’s undrinkable crap!) The reason for the “Coke Zero” and “Pepsi One” and “Dr Pepper Ten” names is marketing. Even nowadays the prefix ‘diet’ is considered wimpy and is still seen as being primarily ‘for women’.

Oh, and the literal meaning is the calorie count: Coke Zero has 0, Pepsi One has 1, Dr Pepper Ten has 10 etc.

Who’s this Mr Pibb fellow?

It’s not really Coke vs Pepsi if they’re both Diet and both Cherry. One takes stuff out, the other puts stuff in, and they’re now too closely homogenised.

Go back to raw Coke and raw Pepsi, is my recommendation.

Mr. Pibb hasn’t been around for a while. It’s now Pibb Xtra.

No honorific?
Wow. Even my soda-stream flavoring is called Dr Pete!

At Braum’s in Oklahoma, their store brand Dr Pepper-ish soda is called Special Flavor

I accidentally bought one. It almost tasted like a bad batch of Pepper/Pibb, was definitely not cola. All their other store brand soft drinks are okay.

IME, Dr Pepper is very popular here.

I’m leaving diet out of the equation entirely, as I can’t stand ANY diet soda. Vile, awful stuff.

Regular Dr. Pepper has been my soda of choice since my early teens and always will be. (I like Cherry Dr. Pepper also, but drink it less often.)

As to your final question: for years and years I chose Pepsi if my only choice was cola. Then about five years ago, I had an epiphany: Pepsi suddenly tasted TOO sweet to me, and I came to appreciate the greater tartness of Coke.

This was much to the delight of my wife, a lifelong Coke fan who can’t stand Pepsi. (But she can’t stand Dr. Pepper either!)

I haven’t read the rest of the thread, but I would be surprised to learn of anyone who can’t instantly tell the difference between regular Coke and Pepsi.

It takes a special kind of doctor to use his first name. It takes an even more special doctor to go by Pete instead of Peter. I’m thinking Oprah crony or porn doctor.

It started it Texas, and until recently a plant in Dublin, TX made it without HFCS. I don’t completely understand the regional difference in that part of the world, but I hope it’s “close enough” to you.

Actually, nothing qualifies as “nectar of the gods” unless it’s root beer.

But I digress. . . .

NutraSweet is aspartame. You’re probably thinking “Maybe sucralose” (“Splenda”).

Yeah, but not for that reason. I misread “The NutraSweet Company makes and sells NutraSweet, their trademarked brand name for the artificial sweetener aspartame, and Neotame” as «Nutrasweet the product is made from aspartame and Neotame.» Splenda has other stuff in it as well, dextrose and maltodextrin, which aren’t zero-calorie despite claims.

I am with DChord568 here, Diet Cola is not Cola, it tastes like metal filings and kitten pain. It must taste different to other people because you would not drink it if tasted like it does to me.

I wish there was a diet cola that tasted decent because I really don’t want to drink all that sugar.

The over-the-counter stuff does (it’s about a quarter as caloric as actual sugar), but the “Splenda” they add to commercially produced goods is usually a non-caloric pure sucralose liquid. This is how “Diet Coke with Splenda” can have no calories. It’s actually possible to obtain this liquid on the Internet, but it’s so sweet that even a drop of the stuff is way too much for anything you’d make in a home setting.

I’ll grant your point if it’s for a taste test. However, for dietary reasons, raw Coke or Pepsi just isn’t possible for some of us. I’m diabetic and overweight. A can of normal soda has about 140 calories and 39g of sugar. I could only drink about 2 oz. and that’s just not enough for me. I drink a couple cans of diet soda a day, I can do without all that sugar. And I like the taste of Coke Zero and Diet Dr Pepper just fine, as well as Diet Mountain Dew and most diet orange soda, too.

Nobody caught this? Dr Pepper isn’t a cola.

no it’s a soft drink, unless it’s in a can or bottle.

Maybe it’s due to the horrible cough syrups I had to take as a kid, but I’ve always – *always *-- found cherry flavoring to be one of the most loathsome products ever intended for ingestion. Can’t even stand the smell of any cherry-flavored product.

That said, Coke Zero is my drink of choice, and CZ Vanilla is as good, if not better. After that, I’ll take Diet Coke (with or without caffeine), followed by Diet Pepsi (same). There’s no other decent-tasting cola product around. I won’t touch Dr. Pepper or Mountain Dew, but I’ll settle for a root beer or lemon-lime, if a diet version is available, or a plain seltzer if not.

It’s not a soft drink if it’s in a can or bottle? What is it, then?

Its a cola.
