Wednesday
A roofer, leaving a finished job, turns a corner to see an ambulance in the drive of a home with a roof half exposed and materials on the lawn, and knows, this can’t be good!
He stops in to tell the man’s wife he’ll cover over the roof, (the weatherman hereabouts is calling for some major rain storms). Understandably upset, she tells him they were doing it themselves because her husband has been laid off and she’s had her hours cut back, she can’t afford to pay him. He makes it clear that there will be no charge. While she’s at the hospital his crew covers over, temporarily, the roof.
By the next morning he had rearranged a busy schedule and contacted a few suppliers. He and his crew showed up, as did a free dumpster, and spent the day totally rerooffing their house. The crew worked for free and the roofer was sincerely shy and humbly uncomfortable, when it made the news. The fellow who fell from the roof broke his back, but will recover. He returned to his newly roofed house having never met the people who did it!
Thursday
A local highschool played a day long celebratory soccer game, in the day long drizzle to honour a fallen friend who adored the sport.
A young lady only 17 yrs old who began her school year filled with plans for ‘after graduation’, and a vibrant thirst for what next in life. A few months into her school year she was diagnosed with a very rare and aggressive form of brain cancer. They ached to see her rapid decline. When it looked like she might not make it to her graduation, a goal she had been so outspoken about, they proceeded to take their graduation ceremony to her. Robes and pomp, and a few days early, all set up in a hospital corridor.
She had passed on Monday and this was how they decided to spend their last day of school for the year, playing soccer all day in the drizzle.
Friday
A nearby town, St Thomas is having an airshow this weekend, not uncommon this time of the year. The weatherman has not been cooperative up till now, calling for rain and more rain.
So a 7yr old girl in a local school, who had leukemia had died during the school year, saddening the school and all who knew her.
Her Dad had been connected to aviation in some way or other, and the girl had a deep and abiding love of airplanes. Earlier in the week someone threw out the idea of remembering this child on the last day of school.
In a heartbeat was thrown together a mini air show, including sky divers landing on the playfield, for a primary school assembled, all wearing her favorite colour, spelling out her name, (to help them spot the right field!).
All the pilots and aircraft involved, from several countries, volunteered in a heartbeat.
They were delivered a spectacular summer day and made their flyovers and jumps picture perfect to riotous cheers. Her parents were laughing and cheering along with the kids.
I think you much agree, my community rocks!
