My dog died yesterday

I hesitate, because I did that recently for my CGM.

Not sure how much pride I really have, though.

I am so, so sorry that you are going through this pain! It doesn’t matter that people “write about this all the time.” What matters is that you lost someone you love and are in pain! Our animal families live far too short a time as it is, so losing her so soon is an even greater blow. :broken_heart:

Sorry for your loss, it is never easy.

Seconded. Give us a way to kick in and I’ll do it gladly.

My kitty died six years ago and it still hurts sometimes.

I’m so sorry. Evie was truly blessed to be yours.

Thanks. I had a thought that when I’m off for two weeks at winter break, Dec 22 - Jan 5, IIRC, there would be some time just to be with a new dog, and maybe even transition to being able to be alone in the house, so she doesn’t have to be in a crate when I leave for work.

FTR, I’ve trained all my dogs to have the run of the place when I’m at work, but it doesn’t always happen in days. With Evie, it took about 3 months, and medication, because she had so much anxiety, not to mention she had been in a shelter for a long time, and being in a small space was what she was used to. But she was able to be by herself (with a different cat) by like, spring break, when I had some days alone with her.

She had sort of “outgrown” being destructive, probably because her scent was everywhere, but also because her anxiety level was down, and she knew what things were her own chew toys, and just chewed up those. She also knew that if she had to go potty before I got home, she had a pad on the bathroom floor that was “potty” space (and near the litter box). Teaching her to use it was easier than I thought it would be.

When I left for work, she’d whine a bit, but when I said “You’re in charge” to her, she’d run to the window to watch me lock the door and leave.

She was very protective. Actually, she took being a dog very seriously. It was interesting.

She was a fun dog, and very snuggly.

I’ll stop now, but thanks to everyone who read my reminiscences.

I think you can still donate to the old one, for my CGM, since I never took it down. I don’t know about checking with mods first, though. It’s still the one they gave me permission to post, but if people are doing it for a different reason, I might need the mods permission.

I don’t have any pride left, though. I need to pay for her ashes without using the rent money.

When it comes to something you need to do (and having been in a similar boat about a month ago, I understand the need), pride is irrelevant.

That said … link to the old GFM, if it’s still live?

Yes.

Well, since someone else suggested it, and I have no pride left, I’ll write an open post to the moderators: Is it acceptable to set up a GoFundMe on the board to cover the costs of my dog’s cremation?

I can just post a link to the old one, which is still live, because I never thought to delete it, or I can set up a new one just for the dog.

Mods?

I think you may need to report that post, or contact the mods directly. Otherwise they might not notice the request.

Flagged it so a moderator would see it.

Thanks!

Hey, the mods have discussed this. Please DM me a draft post linking to the existing GoFundMe, and we’ll let you know if it needs any changes.

Yes, but I want permission from mods to repost it.

Anyone who wants me to PM them my PayPal email is welcome to have it. I just hesitate to post it on an open thread.

Vet texted that ashes are ready; I know they’ll keep them a while, but I’m still feeling a bit of urgency right now.

Just want to add my sincere condolences. I lost my Bernese Mountain Dog to a painless but crippling neurological condition, too – he reached a point where he just stopped eating and gave up the will to live. The innate intelligence of dogs makes their deaths all the more deeply moving and sad.

Thanks.

Warning on the next part, and it gets pretty personal on what made my mind up to take her in.

Yes, my dog’s condition was essentially painless, because it killed pain-conducting neurons in affected areas, for the most part, but the vet couldn’t say for certain she was completely pain-free, and did give her gabapentin for the last few days. She also had trazadone, because she would get hyper, or something, from time to time, and the vet couldn’t even say for certain whether it was a direct neurological problem, or her being upset because she knew something was wrong. She couldn’t settle down and rest.

That last bit made me decide if she got any worse, it was time. Then, she would come for snuggles, but occasionally yelp when being pet, and losing the ability to enjoy affection was the clincher. I wanted her to still want to be touched, and be comforted by my presence, so her last moments would be relaxing, and not pain- or tension filled.

I took off work on the Friday that I had a feeling might be her last day.

I also couldn’t take work off indefinitely while she was ill, and I couldn’t let her die alone.

As sad as it was, she was old, and I’m confident I gave her a good life-- not to mention she was on borrowed time when I first got her. So, I’ll say that it wasn’t tragic. On the whole, her life was a blessing.

I’m still tearing up at her pictures, but I’m getting a little perspective. She died being held, with her head in my lap, and a very compassionate vet in attendance.

A reminder to all, that permission to advertise a GoFundMe or similar crowdfunding on the SDMB is the exception, not the rule. As always, we do not give permission lightly, and want all to understand it’s not something one should depend on. In this case, the poster has had an ongoing financial crisis, so we’ve allowed overlap between the individual spikes.

Each case is handled by the modloop as a whole, so responses can take time, which is never a reflection on the worthiness of the poster or their requests. This is another reason why posters should not depend upon the option or process.

We have not and are not putting in any hard rules at this time because each emergency is different. But we do want all to be careful with such requests - just as in the real world, it is not only hard to ask for help, but it is stressful to see the request and not feel able to help.

Hey, guys-- still haven’t quite got it together since the last GoFundMe, and as many of you know, my dog recently died. I need ~$600 for the cremation, and other expenses, in order to be able to get her ashes back.

So, at the suggestion of a couple of other board members, I’m appealing to you all again.

Here’s a link to the old GoFundMe from the CGM appeal. It’s still live, and if any of you can spare a little to help with my dog’s final expenses, I would appreciate it so much.

Since that link isn’t highlighting, maybe it’s expired; here’s another one:

I’m so sorry for your loss. They truly leave outsized holes in our hearts when they pass. I’ve chipped in a bit and I hope you’re able to bring her home soon.
