My dog died yesterday

Yeah, I know people write about this all the time. I don’t have much to add, except there was something right about is being Dorothy Parker’s birthday.

Yes, I know it is also the day Richard III died at Bosworth, and ended up buried under a parking lot.

A lot of great comings and goings on this day.

She was 11, and had been living really well with a neurologic condition for about a year, but it went sideways last Tuesday. She was about 50lbs, so it wasn’t a really long life, but it was “white muzzle” territory.

She was loved and spoiled for the 8 years I had her, and when I got her, she was a shelter dog on borrowed time. She had a good run, but I’ve lost my best friend.

My cat has been extra-snuggly-- I don’t know if she’s being sensitive, or just seeing an opening. She’s a shelter pet too.

Evie was just “mixed”; she wasn’t even half this, and half that-- just a mutt with a great personality. I don’t know what kind of care she had before I go her, but she was so anxious about a lot of things, not to mention not trained at all, so I don’t think her care was great.

I loved her, and I’m pretty sure she loved me.

I’m so sorry, Rivkah. Been there, done that.

May your grief be mercifully brief, but may your memories of your faithful, beloved sidekick be sweet and everlasting

I’m sorry to hear about your loss. My dog is 13, and I’ve noticed he’s slowed down quite a bit lately and spends much of the time sleeping. I used to take him for long walks in the woods, but not so much anymore. I live alone and dread the day he leaves me. I doubt that I will ever get another dog at this stage in my life.

Bank on it.

Sorry your friend has gone. It hurts like hell.

Losing the junior citizens hurts.
Sorry for your loss and pain.

I’m sorry to hear that Evie is gone, but I’m glad you guys had your loving years together.
I lost my most precious dog a few weeks ago, still feeling it daily.

I’m very sorry for your loss. I’m glad you had those eight years together.

The cat may also be grieving. Hold on to each other.

Sorry for your loss, doesn’t matter that it was ‘just a dog’ I get despondent when it was ‘just one of my cats’

Dogs are marvelous companions but you’re always saying goodbye.

We lost the saluki a couple months ago and for the first time in over thirty years are a saluki-less household. We’d been trying to get a replacement for a couple years since his buddy died – salukis do better in at least pairs – without success. We thought we’d have one in November but the bitch failed to settle so now we’re hoping for spring from the same breeder.

I’m so sorry to hear of the loss of your dog. They say a dog is just a chapter in your life, but to your dog, you are the whole book. You should take some solace in knowing that you gave your dog a good life.

I’ll get another dog, but Evie taught me how devoted a rehomed dog can be. Will definitely adopt an adult dog. I happen to live in a very pet-friendly place that has no size or breed restrictions. Indiana has a LOT of homeless Pit Bull mixes, and I love Pit Bulls.

Don’t have a plan, but I need to get to the point that Evie’s picture makes me smile instead of cry.

Sorry to hear about Evie. I gave our dog Jack some extra pats; rescue dogs are the best (tied with rescue cats).

^^^ QFT, both parts (although technically Aesop was my daughter’s dog, he regarded my lap as his territory even after he outgrew it).

It will come, probably when you least expect it. And you will find that her pictures are even more precious. In the meantime, peace be upon both of you.

I am so very sorry. It’s so hard, take care of yourself.

Hoping the magical dog distribution system works in your favor as soon as you are ready.

It always seemed to work that way for me. (Cats, possums and crows too…hmm and grandkids, I suppose).

But grieve well. And hug the kitty.

My cats do seem to sense when we need extra snuggles and purrs.

Our condolences.

Cat has not left my side.

I asked for cremation to receive the ashes, even though I have no idea how to pay for them.

Are those internet loans where they charge you huge interest if you just make the payments, but where you can supposedly avoid interest (you still have to pay a fee, but it’s the same thing you’d pay at a walk-in pay day loan place) for real, or do they have some sneaky way of making sure that you will end up making all the payments, like putting anything you pay toward the interest first?

Otherwise, I’m going to have to apply for a credit card, and I’ve been trying hard to stay away from them. You can’t ask, I have discovered, for a lower limit than what they bestow, so the danger of running them up is there.

I really want the ashes. I have ashes of all my pets, except childhood ones, and a much younger first cousin has promised to empty all the containers into my grave when I die (even if I’m cremated, I’m still going to get a small plot, because I know it can be important to a child to have a physical place to visit).

The Jewish cemetery has small plots for infants, ashes, and body parts that died before the rest of the body (it’s a Jewish thing) that are in a hilly spot, thus can’t be larger plots, and are pretty cheap. You don’t have to dig deep for cremated remains.

I really think the boychik will want a physical place.

Can you set up a Go Fund Me or something similar? If I had your email I’d PayPal a little something right now. We have a series of containers containing the ashes of companions so I share your sense of importance.

I’m so sorry. I’m sure she loved you!

Oh, I’m so sorry to hear this. I have a 13 year old who has just had the last of his teeth removed (well, he has one fang left), and I increasingly dread the day.
