My 9 month old puppy took 3 majors (that means he beat a lot of dogs) in 3 days and finished his AKC championship. I guess I’ll forgive him for chewing up my baseboards.
Here’s his mugshot:
Best of Breed win
What a beautiful little dog! And already best in breed at nine months! I’m impressed.
He’s still a bad widdle boy to eat the baseboards, though.
Cool! What breed is he?
Congrats! He’s gorgeous! (And looks like he knows it!)
My SIL’s Clumber spaniel ate a bookcase.
He’s a Shiba Inu. He ate 2 of my windowsills too. He only has about a dozen chewies he could have been gnawing on instead, but NOoooooo…
What a lovely looking dog. A real beauty. I would forgive him too. I have one that likes to chew also. Which is the reason I had to buy a $100 couch cover that won’t stay in place. Congrats.
Congratulations, that is wonderful! I love watching conformation shows. I compete in obedience with my dog, but I love checking out all the beauties in the breed ring.
HEY!
Dat’s a SHIBA!
My lil’ guy’s a Shiba, too. Not a champion :-(, but he’s perfect in me and Mr. Athena’s minds. They’re wonderful dogs.
(and how the hell did you get so many responses to this thread without ONE saying “Hey - he looks like a little fox!”?!?)
Shhhh… I’m sure it’s coming.
The best was when someone asked me if he was a wolf. Smallest wolf I’ve ever seen. :dubious:
He is beautiful! Is there an age requirement for dogs to compete? How can judges compare a puppy with a full-grown dog? (Or is he full-grown?)
My dog ate our carpet but she didn’t win a championship to make up for it.
Wow - finished as a puppy? that’s really rare, especially for AKC! Especially for a rare breed… with majors! Wow. CONGRATS!
I have an Aussie right now who’s being shown CKC/ASCA and soon AKC. She has a 3 point major in CKC, which she took as a 6 month old puppy. The catch is that right now she’s 16 months and thin as a rail. Booyeah. talk about awkward. I don’t think she’ll finish before she fills up, which means until she’s about 3 years old or so!
Velma in answer to your question - yes, you can “finish” a puppy from 6 months of age. Dogs are not being compared to each other, but to their breed standard Some puppies just meet the breed standard even as little tykes - others go through awkward phases - especially the larger breeds.
I know a little english springer spaniel that was winning show upon show as a junior puppy (6-9 months) - going Best Puppy in Show AND Best in Show as a pup! Impressive, to say the least.
In some breed clubs, like ASCA which has its own conformation shows (that’s championship stuff), the dog needs two majors (which means defeating a larger number of dogs in competition at one time). In other clubs, dogs need to have competed as dogs over 1 year of age before they can get their Championship (just to make sure they mature to the breed stardard, too - since they’re not done growing until they’are 2 or so…) In Scandinavia, some breed clubs require the dogs to pass “instinct tests” - like herding tests or hunting tests before a dog can get their conformation championship. In other words, the dogs have to prove they meet the standard’s temperament/workability! I find that neat.
Hey - he looks like a little fox!!
I love shibas! They are the most gorgeous little dogs - and congrats on his win! Only 9 months? That’s pretty freakin’ impressive.
Ava
You crossed a fox and a wolf, huh.
Is there anything recombinant DNA technology can’t do?
