My family is adopting a rescue Gordon Setter

And he’ll be at the house in about an hour!

My parents got in touch with someone at TarTan rescue a few weeks ago and decided to get a second dog to go along with this lunatic, Maggie. They picked him up in Massachusetts a few hours ago and he should be home shortly. He’s seven years old and a little smaller than our old Gordon, Lucy. The old girl was a real family dog, so I think they’re making a good choice in getting another one. I don’t know how Maggie will respond to him, but I hope to go to the dog park with them later to find out. I’m proud of my parents for going with a rescue dog - that was a very kind thing to do. Here’s hoping this is a good home for Desi.

Yes, they’re following Lucy with Desi. It’s a coincidence, but we hope it’s an auspicious one.

Marley - I have only ever seen Gordon Setters that are black and tan, like rhis. Are you sure that’s a Gordon? ANyway, a dog is always a good thing.

How’s your brother doing?

StG

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m guessing Maggie is their current dog, a springer(?) and they’re adopting Desi, a Gordon, as a companion.

Meanwhile, hooray for rescue dogs, and hooray for Gordons! They’re really, really nice pooches; I’ve always been really attracted to the setters.

Maggie looks like she is plotting something unspeakably heinous. I’d watch that bitch if she were mine.

I laughed out loud when I saw the pic of Maggie. She is totally watching me!

Good for your parents!

My Mother adopted a 10 year old black lab last year from The Denver Dumb Friends League. Apparently, this dog was brought to the shelter a year earlier, very under weight. Some one adopted him, and brought him back, even lighter then he was before. The poor dog needed a loving home. My mom took care of my brother’s lab for several years and grew quite attached to him, but he finally took him to Germany. So she was lonely for a dog.

I remember the day she brought him home… I was rooming with her while between apartments, and I had fallen asleep on the couch. I was awoken by doggie-tongue-kisses. The poor guy was very frightened, but he seemed to like me! His tail started wagging later that day, and almost a year later, it hasn’t stopped. I think he wags it in his sleep too.

He is very well behaved, and plays like a dog half his age. He likely had good owners early in his life, but had bad luck with people later on. I am happy that My mom and this dog found each other because they both needed someone to love.

Sorry if the OP is unclear. Maggie is an English Springer Spaniel, and I think that photo does capture her personality.

Desi (shown here in a cell phone photo) arrived at the dog park yesterday afternoon, and he seems like a great, high-spirited dog with a nice personality and tons of energy. He’s actually smaller than Lucy was, darker, and very skinny- but if he’s underweight I am sure my family will take care of it. They tell me he’s getting along fine with Maggie, and they seemed curious about each other at the park. He barked at her a little and didn’t pay too much attention to us. There were too many other dogs to examine, room to run around in, and so many things to pee on…

The bad news is that my mom and Tyler don’t care for the name Desi. Tyler actually wants to rename the dog after a character from Mallrats, which is a particularly atrocious choice- but since I’m not living with them, there isn’t much I can do other than ignore it when I visit.

StGermain, Tyler is healthy and doing pretty well. He had a checkup in Boston last month that went fine. He’s still have some speech problems and some minor procedures that were supposed to add strength to his voice really haven’t worked. If anything that’s gotten a bit worse, and created some complications with his swallowing that have really frustrated him. He’s been a little reluctant to do any speech exercises, but maybe with some practice and time they’ll improve.
