My father is being evacuated from a cruise ship

This isn’t by any chance a repositioning Canal crossing cruise, is it?

It’s actually two back to back cruises, each two weeks. Miami to San Diego and back, through the canal each way. Should have been a great time for them  At least they made it through one crossing.
Dad was discharged yesterday evening, and they were able to get flights booked for today. Last note from Mom was they made it to the airport. Should be home this evening.

Then he can start seeing his doctors, and see if they can figure out what’s going on.

Cruises are a great vacation option for people with health and mobility issues. Everything you need … bars, restaurants and a variety of entertainments are all a short walk away from your “hotel room”, there is ample staff and they are used to dealing with things like mobility scooters and oxygen tanks and there is a doctor and a well-equipped medical office on board.

Granted, sometimes there may be a health problem that will cut the vacation short but that can happen anywhere. I once saw a youngish guy with a family suffer a fairly serious injury at the first port stop - a fall that resulted in a fractured leg and a sprained arm. If this had happened during a “land-based vacation” it probably would have ruined the trip. As it were, the guy was kind of stuck on the ship in a wheelchair but had access to the restaurant, bars and clubs and ( to some extent) the outdoor and pool areas- but his family was able to go ashore without him.

Thanks. The reason I asked is that I was on a repositioning Canal crossing some years ago–and there were two simultaneous medical emergencies that caused us to make an unscheduled stop in Peru. One was a passenger with a bowel obstruction (passenger died). The other was a crewman who had had some cardiac incident. (We think he lived, but aren’t sure.)

Quick update. They did get home Wednesday evening. I met them at their condo. They are tired and happy to be back.

He’s seeing his local docs. Lots of blood work. No answers yet, but at least I can drive down the street to see them now.

I’m happy he is home and able to see doctors who are familiar with him. This must have been so frightening for all of you.
