Today is the day. At 5:30 I fly out of Tampa to Newark NJ. I didn’t think I would be nervous to fly again but here I am finding myself a little on edge.
I have already decided not to drink any alcohol before or on the flight. Not because I’m afraid I won’t be able to fight a hijacker but rather Im afraid I’ll get drunk, see some guy get up to go to the bathroom and tackle him!
ME: “where do you think you’re going!?!?” Scared Passenger: [sub]“bathrooom”[/sub] ME: “NOT ON MY WATCH!!!”
Good luck! I thought by the thread title that it was your first time flying EVER, and I have some pretty good advice for those types.
This is different, though.
I will say that despite the cheesy cliche repetition, it probaly really is the safest time to fly. Also, the cool thing is that the airlines are being fairly shipshape these days! Two days ago I went to the airport to get a friend, who actually was arriving from Newark, and the flight was ON TIME. Can you believe it? She had her bags and was walking out of the airport within 5-10 mins of scheduled landing time!
Impossible, you say?
True! I say to you!
Good idea re: alcohol. I’ve never understood why people drink on planes. Doesnt booze make people MORE irrational and emotional?
The only real advice I have is= reading material. Something
really interesting. Just put your nose in when you board, take it back out when you arrive.
Again, good luck and happy travelling!
I flew this past weekend for the first time since The Bad Thing. I’d never been afraid to fly before, and had no qualms about booking air travel. No problems at the airport, getting on the plane, takeoff, no worries. Immediately after takeoff, the pilot began to bank the plane into a turn…THAT freaked me out. I didn’t expect that, but in retrospect, it makes sense. But all in all, the trip was fine, so I’m sure you’ll do OK too. Good luck.
I had the same thought. It’s not usual to be frightened after the first flight, unless it was traumatic, i.e, through a thunderstorm over the ocean with an engine on fire. Not that that would happen to you! Although it IS more likely than terrorists.
So, buck up. And don’t drink. Take a sleeping powder.
