I bid you and your family peace, kaylasdad. I’ll hold you in my thoughts. I’m glad that your mother’s ordeal has come to a somewhat peaceful end, and hope that your family can give one another the support and comfort you’ll all need in the upcoming days.
I, too, lost my mom first and my dad followed 16 months later. Men of that generation were not made to live alone.
What happened, though, is that my dad and I got an opportunity to know each other better over that next year. Mom and I had been very close but Dad was always the stoic breadwinner and would always pass the phone to Mom. 
Take gentle care of yourself, kaylasdad. Take solace in the fact that Mom is no longer in pain. May you all survive the holidays remembering the good times.
And preparing the Christmas meal for that large of a crew is an honor, indeed. Wow.

My condolances. My father died one year ago today. He had been very ill for a while, and I was going home for Christmas knowing that I would be seeing him for the last time. I didn’t get to see him. My sister called me while I was in line to board the plane. The plane was full of happy families going to see their loved ones at the holidays, and I was the guy with tears in my eyes.
