"My Name Is Earl" returns tonight!

Just a reminder – after many weeks of repeats, “My Name Is Earl” returns tonight!

I thought it returned last week - don’t remember the Rosanne ep they showed - but if I recall, my on-screen TV guide didn’t call it new, either.

Maybe I blacked out one week.

Hey, great! I’d missed last week’s and thought it was a new one. The Roseanne ep was a repeat, though - she played an ex-nun who’d lost her faith because of Earl’s and Randy’s practical joke. I’m long overdue for a return to Camden County…

Finally. This show is one of my top five. Randy is such a great character.

Surprising that nobody has yet commented on the actual viewing of the episode, so I guess I’ll start.

I hated it. Not a single laugh in the entire episode. Randy is becoming too much of a whiner. Too little of Catalina.

I did find it a bit flat. And if Randy was going to wear a Mexican-themed hat, why wasn’t he wearing the Amigos de Garcia one?

That was a long hiatus, it wasn’t one of the better shows.

Patty the daytime hooker asking the reporter if anyone every told her she looked like a daytime hooker was funny.

I didn’t laugh either, except for Joy being color blind and Crab Man hiding from the camera.

The Randy subplot was actually kinda sad.

Yeah, I was a little underwhelmed. Some good laughs there, though: Randy and Earl doing Crazy Arms. The TV news reporter getting punk’d over and over. Randy freaking out in front of the green screen when his shirt “disappeared.” Dodge and Earl Jr. in their clubhouse moments before Earl flattens it… and then drunkenly realizes that he left Randy back at the bar.

And gets back behind the wheel. :smack:

Was it sad because the character was assumed to be mentally retarded already? (I’m a new viewer, and I thought the “edited” news footage of him was pretty funny.)

Sitcom producers walk a fine line sometimes— dumb is endearing and funny, provided they’re unlikely enough to not appear authentically disabled.

Sad because there’s a fine line between funny and pitiful. Tonight’s episode made me wonder what would become of him if he didn’t have Earl.

I thought the only funny part was Randy being Pac-man during the weather report.

You guys should check out the My Name Is Earl section on NBC.com. They have these hilarious extra videos, Randy asking the internet questions, A Telenova Earl starring Catalina, and a Bad Karma situation with Kenny with Jason P playing a drag queen hooker. Funny stuff.

One throwaway line tonight was Earl explaining why Joy had the video recorder so handy.
“She had it close because she had been recording Wheel of Fortune.”
Joy: “I’m racially color blind. See, I have one white kid and one black one, but I can’t tell which one is which.”
Randy: I remove body parts from you all the time while you’re sleeping.

Yep, that was my one laugh too.

I thought that was the best part. Also liked how Joy was “taping” a show by filming it with a handheld video camera (rather than just using the VCR).

As for how the reporter creatively edited the story – totally saw that coming. They advertised that way too clearly, especially with the “I pooped my pants!” line while filming (coming shortly after Earl saying about Randy, “He’s special”).

No one else liked Randy’s eight-hour dream about a ball of yarn? That had me on the floor!

Last night’s episode was not very good. I hope the next few episodes (there are not that many left to air this season) are better than this stinker!

Another good bit - Joy heckling Randy from her car: “Run, Forrest, run!” And then that wonderful cackle that Joy does so well.

So do you think they’ll ever get Randy & Catalina back together?

I would like to see that happen eventually. I hope they play up the “her attraction to him/his revulsion to her” angle for a while, though. It would be amusing to see her try and fail to win him back a few times before they finally get back together!
