My new pet needs a new name (warning; contents include snake)

She definitely loves to burrow…

I got home tonight, checked on her, and she was slithering around the terrarium, at full length, she almost covers all three sides of the tank, the 10 is clearly too small for her…

So I called Petco to price a screen top for the 20L, and while chatting with the Petco rep, she brought up their upcoming $1 a gallon aquarium sale…

I’d been looking for an excuse to grab a 40 Breeder tank, so looks like she may be getting some seriously upgraded space soon, either the 20 Long with screen top (cheapest option right now, as I already have the tank) or a 40 Breeder with screen top and no need to upgrade in the future…

…anyway…
After eating dinner, I went back upstairs, and the tank was “empty” again, I spied the tell-tale hole in the bedding showing that she’s shoved herself under the bedding again, sure enough’ hiding under her water dish… She loves the underside of that dish…

So, I got to thinking, since she loves to burrow, I should work up some form of multilevel staging in the larger tank, so she can have at least two levels to burrow in…

Snake eats egg.

With stripes like that, why not call her “Spot”?

I’ll second this name.

King snakes are one family of snakes. There is another family of snakes known as “racers”.
Racers

You don’t want the poor thing to develop a complex from being misidentified.

She’s now in the 20 Long, with a nice thick layer of aspen shavings, her hidey hole and water dish, she’s been exploring her roomier home, deliberately checking all the borders of the screen cover (held down by four 2.5 lb dumbbell plates, one on each corner) and once she realized she had no escape route, she happily burrowed into the aspen shavings and went to sleep

Tomorrow I’ll find a short branch for her to climb on, and maybe put a couple aquarium rocks back in to give her some structures

She’s a lot longer than I expected, I’d hazard a guess that she’s at least 3’ long, the tank is 30" long, and she extends a bit into the corner when fully stretched out

The 10 gallon terrarium was clearly too small for her

Like.

Or since she’s a she, Dot or Dotty.

Belinda–i think it means “daughter of the serpent”.

I always assumed that if I got a pet snake I would call him Reggie.

Soooooo? What did you name her?

Marilyn Manson

Morticia

Bob

Hmm, my logical, Vulcan side says to me “it is illogical to assign a name to an animal that will not recognize its own name” it’s not like she’s going to come when called or anything…

So for now, naming has become a lower priority, perhaps I’ll give that duty to my niece or nephew…

I’ve had her out of her tank a few times and she is amazingly docile and easy to handle, she’s quite inquisitive as well, I just weave her back section through my fingers and let her front section loose to explore, she seems insistent on wanting to climb up my arm for a better view.

She’s amazingly strong for her size, being essentially one long ropy muscle, she’d be a great ambassador for snake-kind, easy to handle, utterly tame, and curious about the world around her.
