Well, we were expecting it for a while. She got a tooth infection, was found to have problems with her kidneys, wasn’t eating much, and in general didn’t look very well, although she didn’t seem to be in pain.
She’d been quite sluggish and inactive for a number of years, but she did enjoy going out in the back yard and sitting in the sun. A few weeks ago, Mom and Dad took her to the cottage, which she enjoyed. She last went and sat in the back yard a few days ago. I was last over there on I guess Monday evening. This morning they woke up and found that she had died during the night.
They’ve recently adopted a stray cat, named Jane, who wandered in and promptly gave birth (there are four kittens - anyone want one?! - who are absolutely adorable). So they won’t go catless.
That cat was so old. She was 18, which is as old as my brother, who had just been born when they got her to chase mice out of the house they were living in in Saint John, New Brunswick. She saw us through three moves and four cities. I’ve known that cat since I could walk.
A long full life, a fairly easy death, and a very, very good cat. Say a prayer for her, if you’re into that.
