My son Dominic's Amazingly Cute LiveJournal

http://dominicgalen.livejournal.com

Dominic is now almost 8 (CAN YOU BELIEVE IT!?!? He was only a year old when I met some of you!) and will be starting second grade in September.

Over the summer I’m having him journal every day because I want him to keep up with his writing, and I think that journalling is a good habit anyway… in addition to that, just having a daily discipline has its benefits.

So if you have an LJ feel free to add him to your friends list! You can also “subscribe” to his journal from his profile and you’ll get his daily entry in your email (one email per day, only, no fear)

I’m also teaching him about email. I think it’s important for a lot of reasons… So if anyone is interested in sending email to Dominic, or if you have kids you think might enjoy it, here is the deal:

his email address is dominic@fathom.org

HOWEVER we have it heavily HEAVILY filtered on the server side. There are only two ways you can get mail to him:

  1. Be on the “whitelist” – if you plan on emailing him more than one or two times, just email me and I’ll add you to the whitelist.
  2. Use the current “code word” in the subject line. The code word is currently chicken

All other mail gets bounced to me instead, as well as sending a reply to the person who sent it, explaining that they need to contact me if they want to send him mail.

(Just remember not to use weird spellings of words or lots of abbreviations or obscure terms. He learned to read this year and he’s pretty good, but he is only at a first-grade reading level!)

You know, I am super, super paranoid and protective myself- God help my future children. But does the “chicken” rule mean that any message with “chicken” in the subject goes to Dominic first? Or do you read and vet all that?

We have the occasionally really immature poster here at the SDMB, and somebody might decide to be a real jerk and send him something nasty or objectionable. Maybe you should read all his mail before he is allowed to look at it.

I really think it is a cute idea to keep him writing though.

Um, if you mean to protect Dominic from creeps, the word “chicken” is NOT the password to use. Trust me.

Aww, his journal is so cute!

What an awesome kid (and an awesome mom).

That seems like a really good teaching tool and a fun activity.

Oh my God, I didn’t think of that!

matt: Before we chose it, I actually looked through all of my spam and found lots of farm references but never actually saw any with ‘chicken’ in the subject line and so far nothing has gotten through that is objectionable.

OH I should also mention that there are other criteria that will block mail. The program we use is what I use to filter my regular spam, and it catches almost all porn spam, viagra, casinos, insurance, etc. that come to MY mail box. Those same filters will also stop mail from getting to Dominic.

I don’t read his mail first, but he always has an adult with him when he checks it himself.

Not quite what I was thinking of (scroll down), but it looks like you’ve got everything under control.

Oh I never knew of that. Wow.

Well, we change the word from time to time anyway.

Oh, how cute!

My favorite so far is this: "Hi ervrybody. I am going back in 7 days oh and mom ilove you and give me a BIG kis. i saw finding nemo today. "

melts into a ball of goo

Cuteness overload!!

“i just no that bad is not good”

Philosophy for the ages.

I think it’s great (grate?) that you’re encouraging to wtite. That’s what saved me in my childhood…and through some parts of my adulthood.
