My son won a scholarship to Jazz Camp!

Long, but I’m braggin’ about my boy here, so I hope you all understand.
First, let me mention that my 16 year old son is almost scarily talented musically. I was into music in school–played piano, flute, trumpet, and was in marching band, etc–but although I can play, it’s due largely to having good lessons and a bit of talent.
This boy, though–he can play. To such a degree that I often sit back and listen and wonder what on earth I am going to do with him, because he is obviously talented and I haven’t the faintest clue about what the world might hold for someone like him. He is blessed to have an excellent band director who is also a top-notch jazz teacher. She has encouraged him to take private lessons, etc, because he could, in her words, “have a future in this.”
Anyway, some 18 months ago, he picked up a trombone for the first time, after having played tuba for three years. Now he is first chair (trombone) in concert band and jazz band, as well as jazz combo. He just joined combo about three weeks ago, and they competed yesterday in a big Jazzfest that is held here each year.
At the end of the evening, we all heard the IU Jazz Ensemble with David Baker, and guest trumpeter/flugelhorn player Ingrid Jansen. After THAT, awards time.
I was busy keeping the baby quiet, and didn’t pay any attention to the scholarship spiel, thinking it was a college-oriented thing for seniors, until Garret turned to me and said, “Mom! He just said my name!” And off he went, my tall, amazing boy, into the spotlight to accept his scholarship.
Full tuition and room and board at the Summer 2003 Crest Lake Jazz Camp! Yes indeedy!

Sah-weet! That’s excellent!

Awesome! Sounds like fun. I know you are very proud.

OUTSTANDING!!! How proud you must be! That’s so exciting.

That’s brilliant! Well done your boy

Long as he’s not hanging out at that…band camp.

That is huge - congrats.

Oh man Bodypoet that’s AMAZING!!! I played drums in HS and always wished that I’d been good enough to play in the jazz band. Way to go Garret!

Hope he has a great time.
