My Turn for Trading Spaces 11/8

Okay, I’m on the West Coast and don’t see a thread, so here goes.

I think they must be looking for people with no taste. Doug gave the first homeowners a black room–complete with a huge black curtain across the wall–and they loved it. Okay, his room was better than I thought it would be–the tables were great, and the red accents were stunning–but it was just too much black. And the curtain would have cut off light to the upper portion, making it wasted space. he has no repect for architecture.

The other homeowners have no excuse at all. Hilda’s kitchen was hideous! Orange and purple! ORANGE and PURPLE! Maybe if the ceiling wasn’t orange, but the purple has to go (and I love purle). Plus, if I had new appliances and someone painted them–especially that badly, I’d be asking for new stuff. And what is with hanging tables and stuff from the ceiling? Adding the little wall was the only good thing in the room.

We did have Handy Andy, though, and that is a good thing.

I totally agree about both rooms. They looked really, really bad. I hated Doug’s curtain, too–and didn’t the Hildibeest hang a purple curtain over a doorway? That never looks good. It always makes me think of hanging sheets up as room dividers, etc.–poor man’s architecture.

I thought Andy was going to stabilize that stupid excuse for a table. I could have sworn I saw it rocking.

I loved everything about the black room, but the walls and the curtains. I’da used the black on the window and the sheers at the stairs. But the walls are just too dark - and that black paint will show every mark against it. I hope they don’t have a dog.

The Pumpkin Kitchen was so ugly it made my eyes hurt. It might not be too bad if the walls were painted white again… and the doors… and why didnt’ they use appliance paint on the appliances?? To ruin new appliances like that is just a horrible waste.

At this point Hildi and Doug are beyond help. They are just mean. Even the freaky new guy cares about how people will live in his room. H&D just want to shock and scare and don’t care about the rooms actually being used.

Yay for being able to see the Hildeous dining room (black and yellow) in the 8pm hour.

I totally want to have Handy Andy’s children. And I don’t say that about just anyone. He was great with Hildi.

That was so bizarre how the homeowners went from “I don’t want them to paint the appliances, I hate bright colors, don’t put a table and chairs in there, etc” to loving that room. Gaaaaaah.

I think that’s all I can say right now without my head popping off.

I was so mad about this episode I actually lost sleep over it. Doug’s room I thought was ok. The tables were really nice, and you could tell he was somewhat basing the room on the homeowner’s style, so they ended up liking it. (Loving that houndstooth rug, BTW.)

Hildi? If I ever meet her I will cram a Swiffer up her bony ass sideways. She thinks she’s all cute and coy but she’s downright offensive to me now. I think I could’ve outsmarted her on the appliances though. (I would’ve said a friend who has an auto-body shop agreed to paint everything CORRECTLY for free, which would save both time and the budget – then have some random friend with a truck come and take the stuff away. Wouldn’t that be a hoot to throw Hildi’s cutsie-poo attitude back in her face when she asked when the appliances were going to be back? “What appliances?” fluttering eyelashes innocently)

I lked Doug’s room. I thought the black and red looked great and I thought the curtain was a good solution to a big gaping hole in the wall. If the HOs want to light the stairway for some reason they can always draw the curtain back. Could it be that Doug just doesn’t respect bad architecture?

Hildi’s room was grotesque. Too much pumpkin. The cabinets should have been painted a different color, or at least a different shade to break it up. The table from the ceiling was ridiculous. I hate it when they do that. What if they want to move the table? The wall was good, but it seems like the table would block easy access to the TV. The table color and fabric color were bad. I think they did use appliance paint but something happened with the stove, they got a can of the wrong kind or something.

I was predicting a major meltdown over the pumpkin kitchen, and I think the producers were predicting one too, placing that reveal second. But the HOs seemed happy with it (although the woman seemed to go pretty quickly from “I like it” to “I can live with it”) and the other HOs about peed themselves with glee over the black room so it’s all good. I wonder if we went there today if the pumpkin paint would still be there.

Did anyone catch the “want to be a TS carpenter, come fill out an application” thing across the bottom of the screen? Are we adding another carpenter, or is someone leaving?

I have to say, I think I’m getting addicted to the SDMB since immediately upon completion of the show, I told my hubby I was going to check e-mail and came to se if a thread had started yet.

In any case, I really liked Doug’s room. Even when he’s a grade-A prime jerk, his designs usually turn out ok. I liked placing the TV in front of the curtain, it gave it a theatrical appearance, and it seems to me that the curtain would help keep the sound from carrying all over the house.

But Hildi, Hildi, Hildi. ::shakes head sadly:: WTF?!?! That was a hideous hideous room. Maybe if the ceiling was still white (or even purple) or if the cabinets were trimed out in a different color, or something! And am I the only one who thought that the control switches and doors on the appliances ended up looking like utter crap since they were stillw hite? And I, too hate hanging stuff from the ceiling. I can only think that they can’t possibly move it if they want to. All in all a terrible room. I think maybe we’ve seen one where the homeowners agreed not to cry on tv, but there may be a duel over the honor of that kitchen once the cameras stop rolling.

BTW, Hnady Andy, you go! Put Hildi in her place! Woo-hoo!

Godmotherfuckingdamnit!!

Hand still broken. Typing still difficult. Entry lost again!

Bat cave = suck
Pumpkin kitchen = not as bad as bat cave.

Yeah, my wife got so mad she turned the TV off in a huff. But she was mostly mad at the homeowners for saying they liked Hildi’s design.

By the way, Hildi’s not the worst in my opinion. Anybody remember the Lamp Lady whose modus operandi was making hideous custom lamps? She seems to have lasted just a couple of episodes. I remember a lamp she made from a metal trash can. Yep, Hildi is Frank Lloyd Wright in comparison.

I do remember that lamp lady. She was just odd.

I still hate Kia, too. Is she still around?

Dez.

I actually liked Doug’s room, which probably says something about me… but I liked it. I’d be happy with that.

But wow. That was so orange. Not only was everything orange, but everything that wasn’t orange was reflecting the orange (you could see the tinges in the stove and refrigerator where they’d caught the orange glow.) It was horrible.
Just plain awful.
And hideous.
And how on earth could they claim to have liked something that ugly? Those homeowners need to learn how to express themselves.

I thought that “balcony” thing was weird to begin with, so covering it up was a good idea. I also liked Doug’s room. I was hesitant about the black (especially since this one aired right after the repeat of Hildi’s Dining Room of Doom), but it seemed to work, and the HOs liked it. I guess since it wasn’t paired with Electric Acid yellow furniture and a hideous 70s disco light, it looked better by comparison.
I LOVED Handy Andy’s coffee table and bar counter. They looked great. He looks like a much better craftsman than either Ty or Amy Wynn or Carter.

Hildi’s kitchen was bad. Too much orange. Just the walls, or just the cabinets would have been better.
And putting the TV in that divider wall in the middle of the kitchen? Where will they plug it in? They always do stuff like that, with no thought to plugging it in, or even a cable hook-up.
And the table suspended from the ceiling? Handy Andy had it right. How are you supposed to cut your food? He gave the camera a look at one point, while dealing with Hildi, a look that was just priceless. He obviously thinks she a twit.
And those chairs she put in there - they looked like you’d be sitting back too far to be able to eat. They sure weren’t dining room table chairs.
And I loved when Handy Andy was snarking on Hildi when they were trying to move the appliances. He knew painting them was a bad idea.
And painting appliances is bad, especially when you don’t know what you’re doing. The fridge would have been okay, but the dishwasher and the microwave looked like crap, with the control panels still white. And using engine paint? They make actual appliance paint. Why not buy that?

Yeah, I saw that. Interesting…
Have you seen the ads with Ty plugging his book? We haven’t seen him in a while, either. Is he leaving?
