Every time I bring up the SDMB on my laptop, the “Unread” count says 1, then I click it and there’s nothing. Sometimes it says “2”, and I’ll click it and there will be 1 unread thread. I’ve tried resetting cache but it persists. Any thoughts on why?
It it matters, this problem is only on my laptop, not my phone.
There are several known glitches where those counts get out of sync w reality. There is no known fix.
My own unread replies count is permanently stuck at 1 more than reality. And my unread notifications count is stuck at 3 more than reality.
Aside: The ATMB category is for issues w SDMB policy and moderation only. The Site Feedback category is for all issues relating to the Discourse software.
If you have someone ignored and they post to a thread you read you’ll get the notification for that post.
That’s been a similar problem for me for 18 months or so.
I don’t think that’s it. I have so many on ignore I have lost count. A particular thread might show 1 unread if the last poster is someone I have on ignore, but that hasn’t affected my notification badge. And it goes away when someone else posts in it (or I can just unhide the ignored post to clear the thread’s unread post count).
I have no users on ignore or mute. And my counts are still goofy.
I do have some categories and tags on mute. Maybe later today I’ll have a chance to explore whether my seemingly wrong counts are from those muted areas.
My unread count is mostly 1, and then sometimes it drops to zero mysteriously, but then it goes back up again. I just ignore it now.
It does appear their last update has caused an issue with the notification of unread posts.
Hopefully it is addressed in the next few days.
This seems to have started just today and it’s already very annoying.
Yep, I’m now seeing it too ![]()
If you ever flag a post, and the moderators then hide it from you (so the mods can chat privately), you may have a notification for a post you can’t see anymore.
Interesting. That may be it.
So it looks like this bug was fixed.
Anyone else have it go away?
It seems to be gone for me.
I’m also now not seeing that defect.
But my unread responses count is still stuck at 1: Responses - Notifications - LSLGuy - Straight Dope Message Board
And my unread notifications are still stuck at 3: All - Notifications - LSLGuy - Straight Dope Message Board while choosing the “unread” filter returns no results.
Setting my preferences to have no users, categories, or tags on mute or ignore gives the same result.
I got it this evening still ![]()
Did you click the Dismiss all button on those pages?
No. Because I don’t want to lose all that history.
I’ll wait until I have another notification to confirm, but I’m 99.9% sure that button just means it marks all of them as read. I don’t think there is a way to actually delete your history.
