Not true. I absolutely HATE Hopkins Lax. I giggled with pure glee when UVA torched them in the championship.
STICK EM’ TIGERS!!!

Boomer Sooner, Boomer Sooner!
Actually, I’m a Buff.
yeah, I’m born a Texan, but I’ve never been a UT fan. I live in the OKC now.
Mom is a rabid Sooner. Has been since the 40’s.
Once again, they have underestimated my OSU Buckeyes. They win a National Championship beating a team NOBODY (but me, or courese:D) said they could beat, and they still start out the year as No 2.
Dipsticks.
Just to muddy the waters. Here’s the ESPN/USAToday Coaches Poll
Ohio State
Miami
Georgia
USC
Oklahoma
Auburn
No Auburn fans here.
Read_Neck…yeah…just another reason we should have a playoff, an honest-to-God PLAYOFF in NCAA Division I football. Every other division has one…don’t tell me that we can’t have one here.
[Southerner], thanks. I dated a lady for a couple of years that graduated from Oklahoma, so I’m not the normal rabid Husker anti-Oklahoma fan that you see. I would dearly love to see Nebraska come back, but my parents (who both graduated from UN…have season tickets, etc…) are NOT happy campers. Dad is about as distraught as I am…and they live in Lincoln, where they have access to all the inside dope. They are not upbeat about this year at all.
sigh
The fans are screaming for a real playoff but it’ll never happen. Look at the difference in those two polls and you get a good idea of the politics involved. When the defending champion does not come out number one on the preseason poll, either it’s a “wishlist” or Miss Cleo gave them a special seance. Gotta say,I’m a fan of the Cornhuskers. They didn’t just win games but gave out serious asswhuppings. Osborne’s going to be hard to replace.
Well, i’m not the world’s biggest college football expert, but i really don’t think this is correct. There’s absolutely no reason why the previous year’s champ has to be number one.
One of the inevitables in sports, and particularly in college sports, is that players leave their teams. Some graduate, other players decide to enter the draft, some even change schools. If the best players on a championship team are a bunch of departing seniors, why should that team be number one the following year?
Just take a couple of examples (one college, one pro) from my local area. When the Baltimore Ravens won the Superbowl a couple of years back, i don’t think anyone picked them to repeat, not even die-hard Baltimore fans. Not only did the Ravens lose a few good players, but many people were still skeptical of a team with such a poor offense. And the skeptics turned out to be correct, as the offense continued to be crap, and the famous Ravens defense also failed to live up to expectations.
And the Maryland Terrapins team that won the NCAA basketball championship last year lost, IIRC, four of their starting five players after the season. There’s no way they deserved to be ranked number 1 at the beginning of the next season. They still did well, but never really looked like winning the championship.
I don’t follow college football cloesly enough to know whether the current pre-season rankings are good or not. I’m just trying to make the general point that, just because a team wins the championship one season, does not mean that it should be ranked number 1 the next season.
And i fully agree that the college football championship would be much more interesting, and more reflective of true rankings, if there was a playoff. I couldn’t believe it when i moved to the US and a friend (who’s heavily into college football) explained to me how the rankings, the bowl games, etc. are determined. Talk about Miss Cleo and seances!
You wanna talk about the politics that keep us from having playoffs? Look no further than everyones favorite… the BCS. Those fuckers have got everyone locked in, and the schools believing their way is the only way. Fuck them. I’d love to see them gone.
Go UConn Huskies!
Pre season polls do not a champion make. That having been said, here’s another:
WAR DAMN EAGLE!
JCoM, Auburn, class of long ago…
Exactly, when they came up with the BCS a lot of the rivalry and interest went out the window. What did we get in return, the Toastitos Fiesta Bowl. Bullshit
Yeah, fuckin’ BCS really sux, man.
Without it, Ohio State would have played Somebody in the Rose Bowl, Miami would have played Somebody Else, Somewhere Else and we all could have been bitchin’ about how we need a system that would have matched up Miami and Ohio State.
Instead the stupid BCS matched ‘em up! How boring. Nothin’ to bitch about except the stupid BCS, and it’s penchant for matching up the two best teams in the country for the National Championship game.
Fuckin’ bummer, man.
Toaster 52,
Don’t know if this is helps or not, but Ohio State wasn’t being talked about last year as a threat to the national championship, and I’m pretty sure they weren’t ranked in anyone’s top ten when the season started. So, if everything goes your way, you might just sneak into the top 25 be seasons end. GO BUCKS!
Toaster52: You know what? I don’t have a nanogram of sympathy for you; nay, I don’t even feel a quark’s worth of sympathy for Nebraska fans.
The precious Cornhuskers are out of the Top 25 for one season and you all are hollering like it’s the end of Western civilization.
Try being a fan of Indiana University football. Babies, then you would know what REAL suffering is. Then you would comprehend agony and humililation and hopelessness.
Wusses.
Amazing that they actually got that right…
Here’s a year early welcome to Big East football. You’ll be replacing Temple, so no pressure.
I just got my new season tickets. Upper deck, 5th row, 47 yard line ** at Owen Field**, baby!
I’ll see you all in New Orleans (well, I don’t see any reason Toaster would be there).
Boomer Sooner!
GO DAWGS!

OLE MISS.
