Mystery character at the end of all my posts

Does anybody have any ideas about why I get an extra character at the end of all my posts? When I compose the post, all looks fine but after hitting the preview reply button, an extra letter or symbol will be added to both the preview and the Message area. I also get spaces inserted in the wrong place in words. I can usually correct the extra spaces but usually when I delete the extra character, it just comes back.

I’m using Netscape 4.61 on a a Mac with OS9. I haven’t seen if the same happens in Linux yet.p

 Just when I thought I would be made a liar of. The damn preview looked fine but up comes the final product. Now I can add a ‘p’ to my ‘z’, ‘o’, ‘¢’, and the the little square.p

Just a WAG on my part, but I bet it’s due to Netscape.

vB was written for IE and Netscape has not always been compatible with it, especially older versions.

vB doesn’t always display perfectly in the Mac environment, either. So between these two situations, you’ve got a problem and I don’t know if there’s a fix for it, either. Sorry.

Your posts look fine, btw.

On the other hand, we’ve got plenty of Mac users, and plenty of them use various versions of Netscape, and I don’t think that this problem has come up before. Mersavets, has this always happened, or is it a recent development?

I have a contrary experience TubaDiva. I’ve used the SDMB for more than a year using a Macintosh (OS 8.0, 8.5, 9.0) and Netscape (4.7, 6.0) and never experienced a problem. Mersavets, have you tried upgrading to Netscape 4.7? I never used the SDMB with Netscape 4.6

I think it looks rather distinguished. Like a monocle.

Don’t try and change it, Mersavets dear, just become known as the Doper who says “p”

Redboss. p

Interesting. Mersavets, is your computer perhaps on the cusp of sentience? Maybe this is its slow, groping way of commumincating its displeasure at being cooped up inside a plastic box? Keep a record of these appended characters, and see if you can break the code.

Are you cutting and pasting your posts from another programme? I sometimes do this to use a spellcheck and the odd formatting character sometimes slips through or an automatically added “smart quote” or somesuch gets converted into a box.

Not to me they don’t. I see the ‘p’ at the end of your two posts at the top of this thread. I see it using Netscape on a Mac, Netscape on a PC, and IE on a PC. I saw a post of yours in another thread with a ‘z’ at the end

I gotta get new glasses, dammit.

Who finally DOES see what’s going on. <sigh>

I’m with Redboss. It’s a distinctive affect, Mersavets, and it looks good on you. Don’t sweat it.p

Thankyou all for your suggestions. I’ve installed iCab and also upgraded to OS9.1. I’m not sure which has fixed it but my mystery character is now a thing of the past.

Chronos, yes, I think this was a recent development. Either that or I’ve only recently become observant enough to notice.

Redboss, how do you expect me to become known as the doper who says ‘p’ when you just usurp my trademark like that? Anyway, it was never that reliable. It didn’t always happen or it wasn’t always a ‘p’. I would have to settle for ‘the doper who occasionally signs off with a random ASCII character’. I don’t think it rolls as well as your suggestion though.

zut, my computer is so old it is on the cusp of senility but that is about all. I think it was made before plastic and is actually encased in mahogany and the serial number is in roman numerals. I’ve tried recording the characters but all I get is DAED SI YENTRACcM LUAP. What am I supposed to make of that?

picmr, I eventually found out that “Preview Reply” was the culprit. The character was added when I hit that button and was added again when I deleted the extra and checked yet again. The wierd thing is, although it’s not always the same character, for the same post that character won’t change. I know I’m rambling but it’s late and I’m tired.
