Mystery Mafia -- Game Thread

Around here, you’re only clear when a combination of confirmed role powers can prove you clear, bucko.

Really, you tell me what it would be?

Guess we just got our first vote for a bad idea. It IS a bad idea, NAF.

(Night zero-only would be sort of intersting, though, given only one person in the entire game saw any effect from it. I don’t mind saying I targeted Drain Bead on the hopes it would give me a leg up on my problem of always finding her scummy.)

Why do I feel like you’re the Systolic of this board

Sorry this thread is moving a touch faster than I expected and I totally missed that post the last time around. I thought you were voting for me without having said anything.

I’ll adjust.

And occasionally not even then.

The majority of my ideas are. That is never really the point. Why is it a bad idea?

Over there, a day is a day IRL. A night is a night IRL. Saturday/Sunday are usually combined into a single game day because nobody wants to be glued to their computer or constantly refreshing their phone on a Saturday night. I get the feeling that there’s much less kicking and screaming over here.

Hey all, game started a little earlier then I thought, still mostly reading the other mafia game I’m in, Astral’s. So, till that is over (or I get killed), I won’t be here much.

Also, [OOG] I’m leaving for vacation today, so most of my posts will be from my phone while waiting in line at Disney World! So don’t expect much from me the next few days… Sorry! (I’ll get my night actions in, don’t worry).[/OOG]

Oh, day ends at 7pm… What time zone is that in again?

My view is this:

Upside, town generates information.

Downside, scum generates the same information, possibly more if we are unlucky (if they can correlate a blocked kill to an action on our part).

The question is weighing them, and the only answer to that question is “is it more important for townies to lock down their powers faster, or is it more important to hide our powers from scum.”

NAF’s suggestion makes some sense as a calculated risk in an environment where absolutely (by which I mean, game-mechanically) confirmed townies are the A-1 prized asset. Most of our games over here run that way, but with this game’s setup I’m not sure. (I’ll be more sure after Night 1’s results tell me approximately how many killing powers we have).

That all said, I do think it might be prudent for townies to consider announcing anything that happens TO them if it’s not an obvious scum power. That seems to me a fairly low-risk way of letting the Doc know who he is in secret.

We have infrequent “Slow Games” where the day cycle is Monday - Tuesday, then Wednesday - Thursday, then Friday - Sunday. Nights are never more than 1 real life night. Usually, though, it’s 1 day and 1 night cycle every 24 hours, except weekends are always 1 game day.

So you guys play a more relaxed schedule than we do.

I will be posting less given that jarring difference, feel like I’m spamming but I really don’t intend to.

Here’s my logic (and I’ve used it before):

The people you find suspicious (often over misunderstood things, as it usually turns up) are never scum.
When I read NAFs suggestion, I also had the thought “Uh, he can’t see anything wrong or bad about that idea?”

However I think the people voting for such people are more likely to be scum than the one being picked apart at the start themselves.

Vote Dancecats

well, in theory yes, but how are you going to communicate to that person that you know their role without outting yourself as a cop?

I mean, sure, when it comes to claim time, it probably is helpful, but even then outting other peoples roles just allowed the mafia to choose the perfect nightkill. I got peeked on the other board, and when the seer claimed I just asked them “should I be targetting good people or bad people” and they said good people (I was a day angel).

There are some roles that reveal the other persons role (i.e, I target you and you get a PM saying something like “zomg you’re totally a vigilante!”). If I targeted myself last night, I would have got my own role revealed to me, and therefore would know to target very very townie players, whereas if I didn’t target myself last night I’d never really know what my action did.

Iirc, that was one of the few roles that got a n0 last game.

Regardless, talking about whether you should have targetted yourself last night or not seems a little pointless at this juncture.

NETA: Sorry, I meant Dancecat.
(we have a user here with the name Danceswithcats, hence the adding of the ‘s’)

Other cultural considerations:

Over here, one of the big rubrics is “lynch all liars”. If you’re town, you need to be VERY careful about being caught in a lie, and have a VERY pro-town and provable justification for it.

It seems like this is one of the fastest games to happen on the Dope, and one of the slowest for our visitors. Keep that in mind when people like me post a few times a day when it’s not our lunch break.

Well, if you’re at Disney World, that means you’ll be spending 80% of your time waiting in line, so you’ll have more than ample opportunity to post

Timezone for this game is Eastern (UTC-4) if I’m not mistaken.

The huge, borderline catastrophic downsides are as follows:

  1. It gives the wolves more information, since villagers probably aren’t going to lie about who they targeted.

  2. It gives the wolves another vehicle to manipulate the villagers, since they will be providing misleading or otherwise bad information.

  3. It’s terrible for seer cover and worse for the real seer(s) since the peeks are going to be out there in plain sight and you can only fakepeek the player you’ve targeted, which is going to be a gigantic trainwreck. When you’re targeting someone you find wolfy/scummy (as you should be), are you just going to fakepeek them wolf? You can’t fakepeek a villager, which is a much better play. And if you fakepeek someone wolf and you are wrong, you’re setting yourself up to get mislynched.

I can go on and on and on if you need more, but I can very safely say that revealing the targets of our night actions is a freaking awful idea. It’s so bad that I can’t believe that any villager/townie wouldn’t see the huge advantage it gives the wolves/mafia, therefore I think you’re scum.

I really do not follow this logic

Define “fakepeek” for me, again?

Whoever is from 2+2 and is using a different username…fuck you imo.
