Nabisco Graham Crackers (and alternatives )

I can’t remember the last time I bought graham crackers before this; it had to have been at least 15 years ago. But I saw them on the shelf and thought “hey, why not? it’s been awhile” and grabbed a box.

What have they done? These taste awful. They are way too sweet and there’s something there that is just wrong. Is it the honey? I don’t remember them being made with honey when I was a kid; when did that start?

Is there another brand that tastes better/different? I have 2 and a half of the packets left in this box and I’m not even gonna make a pie crust out of them I dislike them so much.

I agree that every commercially made graham cracker I’ve found has been dramatically over sweetened for my tastes. The idea of using one for s’mores is repugnant to me. If anyone knows of a decent commercially available one, I’d also like to know about it.

Until that happens though, I bake my own using Alton Brown’s recipe. His formula is still too sweet though so I reduce the brown sugar to one and a half ounces down from the three ounces called for by the recipe.

If you’re brave, you can try Sylvester Graham’s original recipe which called for nothing more than Graham flour and water. I tried it,…once.

Graham crackers have sucked for a very long time. I remember my dad saying that graham crackers don’t taste the same anymore and he died 25 years ago!

They’re too crispy, not that I want soggy crackers, but I think they used to be denser (I don’t know if that’s the word).

They’ve been called honey grahams for at least 25 years (my guess). Maybe that’s what my dad noticed!

I used to love graham crackers and peanut butter for breakfast. So I get the craving every once in a while and buy a box. I have one meal of them and then a year later find the box shoved in the back of the cupboard and have to throw them away.

My grandma would make me “mushed up graham crackers”. Back then she would heat up milk on the stove and then pour it over a bowl of graham crackers. It would have the consistency of oatmeal. I did the same for my kids. I can still smell it. MMM MMM

There’s a difference between Graham crackers and Honey Grahams.

That certainly seems to be the crux of the biscuit, RealityChuck. All I ever see at the grocery store are the blue Honey Maid boxes; I didn’t know Nabisco made any other kind of graham cracker. I’ll have to pay attention and find the red box with regular graham crackers.

Thanks!

I’ve never only seen the blue box of Graham crackers. They taste the same as I remember. I like them with peanut butter.

Kroger has a generic store brand that seems less sweet. These aren’t the honey Graham.

Keebler sells Graham Crackers. I haven’t tried them.

A variant recipe for smores replaces the graham crackers with saltines. Worth a shot?

You could try McVitie’s digestive biscuits. They’re sweet, but not overly so. Should be able to find them at a UK importer, like British Foods Inc.
