Graham crackers, broken into little squares, in a bowl, add milk and eat with spoon.
Comfort food.
My grandfather died when I was just a little kid, but I remember he showed me how to make this wonderful delicacy. Although I don’t really remember much about him, I do have fond memories of eating graham crackers and milk with him whenever I would visit.
I really like graham crackers. But for some strange reason, over time I forget all about them. Then something like this pops up and I remember, “Oh, yeah. I like those. Why don’t I buy them more often?”
Does anyone have a strong preference for a particular brand? Are there “gourmet” graham crackers? I read once that “genuine” graham crackers are made from graham flour, not regular flour. Any guidance here?
I always spread the graham crackers with Cool Whip, put another on top, and froze them. I gave them to our daughter when she was little. Sort of like ice cream sandwiches, only cheaper! I was such a bad mom. Ha!
I saw on some thrifty-living site to layer them with applesauce and top with whipped cream or cool whip, like a refrigerator cake or banana pudding. I tried it and left it overnight, and it was pretty good, some would say soggy, but I thought it was almost like a mousse.
I melt a stick of butter, add a bunch of brown sugar, pour over a panful of graham crackers, and bake it til it all melty and slightly chewy.
There are recipes online but I don’t know the official name. We call it Crack.
I used to spread a square with whipped cream cheese (easier to spread) and top with another square. If you wrap this up and bring it to work, after a few hours it softens up and it’s a little like cheesecake. Also, even though I live natural chunky peanut butter, conventional smooth PB is much better on graham crackers.
I used to eat them plain, while drinking a glass of milk. On one hospital visit, though, I was given graham crackers, peanut butter, and milk as one of my snacks. I tried it. I liked it. It was a miracle…food, in a hospital, on my diet plan, that tasted good!
