Name for new Poodle Puppy

So, we just got the young man home and we are trying to introduce him to the rest of the pack.

Presently, he is crying his heart out. Probably missing his littermates.

another picture.

still one more picture.

He looks just like the former British Prime Minister and George Bush’s poodle to me!

Hm… He looks like a Rogers to me.
Going to grow up dignified.

Hm. How about Rumpole? You can call him Rumples. He looks kind of wig-ish.

Hmmm…perhaps he does. Maybe… Fred?

Horace! or perhaps Mortimer. ( I too am a fan)

His big “sister” definately considers herself: “to be obeyed”… the bitch…

George Bush had a poodle? I did not know that. (thanks for not suggesting a resemblance to Steven Harper. Brian Mulrooney was something of a poodle fancier as I recall)

and, I think he’s much more attractive than Margaret Thatcher.

:smack:

sorry… you meant Pitt the Elder. Yes, I’d have to agree. Quite the resemblance.

VERY cute puppy.

Some Gaelic names you could consider:

Ciaran meaning dark or black;
Finn, which as a bit of joke apparently means fair, but hey you’d also be naming your dog after Finn MacCool;
Ronan meaning little seal.

Happy naming!

I like Ronan…

but to a Zappa fan, all poodles are Fido!

James Thurber told a story in which he went to visit someone who had, I believe a basset hound. After a period of time he asked the dog’s name, and the owner shyly said “Thurber”. The dog and the author then looked at each other in a mildly embarrassed sort of way. He figured the dog did look a lot like the kind of dogs he drew.

I’ll try to find the citation.

Suggestions from Attacklass and me:
Charlie (after Steinbeck’s)
Toklas (after Alice B. Toklas, another poodle breeder)
Bismark (they’re apparently German, rather than French originally, as discussed on another thread)
DeGaulle
Wooster (after the Wodehouse books)
Poirot (after Hercule)
Chardo

We named our standard Winston. I would have liked to use Dexter, but it was already Winston for a month or so.

Odd, we named our standard Wilson.

My first reaction was “what’s wrong with Thelonius?” but my daughter says when you work with a standard, you have to have a name that’s easy to yell.

So I’ll sugest Phelan (brave as a wolf) or Tynan (the dark one).

James

I have a standard poodle named Maggie.

StG

I guess that puts a kibosh on my suggestion, which was Cuchulainn.

I thought he meant Tony Blair. Bush’s Barney was a Scottish Terrier.

Exactly why I suggested a yelling name for Rumpole. Two syllables, carries well.

Yannik.

What about Bracken? That has a bit of an Irish feel to it.

Monk

Monk was my first choice. The breeder was very happy with Thelonious and seemed to be onside with it. My SO vetoed it saying it sounded too… catholic… She’s not a big jazz fan.

Thanks to everyone!!! for their creative suggestions. In keeping with the Scots/Gaelic theme, we settled on Duff.

Could be MacDuff, Duffy, Duffus…

A bit of a Duffer, wot? Duffington J. Poodle, Esquire.

Just remember, standard poodles are lap dogs. Ask them. They’ll tell you.

We have a 9 mnth old Standard called Ebly (named after a French grain…kinda like calling a puppy couscous or polenta :D).

We are totally in love with our very clever doofus. Ours had a cream mother and a chocolate father and looked black when we got her. Now she just looks dirty as she changes colour on a seemingly daily basis.

Ebly is a total thief, socks, undies, gardening gloves, ANYTHING. But she never destroys anything, she just …relocates it.

Ain’t they just the best dogs!
