Should be an easy one for somebody here- I’m trying to remember the name of an action/romance/comedy movie from the 80s, possibly very early 90s.
Protagonist (one of the brat pack?) is vacationing at a Jamaican resort with his family(?). He gets off the beaten tourist path, I think because he’s on the run from some sort of bad guys. Meets up with some native Jamaicans, who he’s afraid of at first, but they turn out to be helpful and friendly, and he hides out / hangs out with them for awhile. There’s a romantic interest at some point, but I don’t remember if she’s on the run with him or not.
Formulaic coming-of-age stuff ensues, wherein the sheltered rich kid learns to be more self-reliant, open to new experiences, etc. One plot point is while he’s hanging out with the Jamaicans, he keeps trying unsuccessfully to throw a knife or machete and have it stick into a tree. One of the Jamaicans shows him he has to hold it by the handle and throw it underhand, not overhand, as he was doing. This plot point becomes important during the final showdown with the bad guys.
