Nascar 2016

Daytona 500 is tomorrow! WOOT!

Will Kyle repeat?

Will Tony full recover and drive like the same kind of maniac that Kyle was last year?

Will Joey start 2 seasons in a row with Daytona 500 wins?

Will someone finally tell Darrell Waltrip to shut the hell up?

Go fast; turn left (mostly)!

Let’s go racin’!

Tony Stewart is done. The injury he sustained has a recovery time of about half the season, and he hasn’t been right since the accident. He’d be better off packing it in right now or holding off the farewell tour until next year.

Kyle might repeat, but with the Chase format it will be really difficult. Remember, if you get wrecked in the last race you’re done, even if you win 20 races during the season. It’s a stupid way to decide the champion. That said, I’ll be OK with anyone winning except Jimmie Johnson and Joey Logano, JJ because he’s been the beneficiary of some of the most egregious cheating ever caught in addition to the Chase being almost custom-made for him by Brian France, and Logano because he’s an aggressive prick who hides behind daddy when someone turns the tables on him. Kenseth knocking him out last year was simply justice being done.

The really big questions are whether Junior can finally get a title and how good Chase Elliott is going to be. I suspect we’ll get an idea tomorrow. Junior, like his dad, is great at Daytona, and Chase earned the pole so we know he’s fast.

cough

Hoping that Gordon relaxes a bit. He had great insight for the Unlimited, but sounded way too nervous. I second giving DW a back office job.

For the record, I’m rooting for Kurt (and have been since 2000).

So they’ve cut down the field to 40 cars, and guaranteed 36 owner spots in a race no matter how they do in qualifying. NASCAR really doesn’t want anybody new trying to break in, do they?

I thought this was a terrific Daytona 500!

I was shocked when they showed Hamlin’s crew celebrating, then they showed the finish line cam shot and I understood. I really thought Truex had gotten enough of Hamlin’s car to slow him down, but I think Truex let up on the gas a bit where Hamlin just mashed it down harder into the floor, which proved to be the better technique.

Grats Denny Hamlin! (Now let’s see what he can do with the early momentum…)

This, except he’s done now. He should not return as a NASCAR driver. And we are Tony fans, too.

I for one want to see Tony get back in the car if possible before the end of the season if only for him to go out in a positive way.

But even if he does, I would not expect him to have much success.

That was FANTASTIC! What a finish! The last few laps I was all eyes on Hamlin and I’m like, “Go for it! Hit the damn gas!” Plus the announcers were cheering like hell!

Kyle’s car failed inspection so he moves to the back of the pack (39th) while his brother Kurt will now have the pole position.

Fuck Jimmy Johnson.

That was one for the Most Boring Races annal.

I really thought Kyle was gonna pull off another sweep, but Keselowski came flying up thru the pack and just could not be caught.

I felt bad for my man Kurt. The penalty was no one’s fault but his own but he had spent the rest of the race brilliantly making his way back to the top, only to be done in on Lap 224.

Good race today with a great finish. Grats to the Cactus King.

Kyle Busch is freaking amazing.

Feel bad for both Carl Edwards and Martin Truex. One for the pit stop screw up and the other for not pitting.

Today was the best Talladega race ever!

As for the broadcast: I am surprised to find that I like Jeff Gordon behind the mike. There were times when the audio turned to gobbeldygook, however, when the feed from the spotter/crew was being played simultaneously with the announcers’ commentary. Any individual voice was lost. All in all, Jeff Gordon has found a good place, and was a positive addition. This is my opinion, and it is correct.

I agree. I think he’s starting out quite well, and will only get better with experience.

I think that I’ll start work right now on a book about Tony Stewart’s final season in NASCAR; I’ll call it The Worst Last Year of Mostly Turning Left.

The best part of the story is the last quote from Danica Patrick, tho: [
