Tony Stewart is done. The injury he sustained has a recovery time of about half the season, and he hasn’t been right since the accident. He’d be better off packing it in right now or holding off the farewell tour until next year.
Kyle might repeat, but with the Chase format it will be really difficult. Remember, if you get wrecked in the last race you’re done, even if you win 20 races during the season. It’s a stupid way to decide the champion. That said, I’ll be OK with anyone winning except Jimmie Johnson and Joey Logano, JJ because he’s been the beneficiary of some of the most egregious cheating ever caught in addition to the Chase being almost custom-made for him by Brian France, and Logano because he’s an aggressive prick who hides behind daddy when someone turns the tables on him. Kenseth knocking him out last year was simply justice being done.
The really big questions are whether Junior can finally get a title and how good Chase Elliott is going to be. I suspect we’ll get an idea tomorrow. Junior, like his dad, is great at Daytona, and Chase earned the pole so we know he’s fast.
So they’ve cut down the field to 40 cars, and guaranteed 36 owner spots in a race no matter how they do in qualifying. NASCAR really doesn’t want anybody new trying to break in, do they?
I was shocked when they showed Hamlin’s crew celebrating, then they showed the finish line cam shot and I understood. I really thought Truex had gotten enough of Hamlin’s car to slow him down, but I think Truex let up on the gas a bit where Hamlin just mashed it down harder into the floor, which proved to be the better technique.
Grats Denny Hamlin! (Now let’s see what he can do with the early momentum…)
That was FANTASTIC! What a finish! The last few laps I was all eyes on Hamlin and I’m like, “Go for it! Hit the damn gas!” Plus the announcers were cheering like hell!
I really thought Kyle was gonna pull off another sweep, but Keselowski came flying up thru the pack and just could not be caught.
I felt bad for my man Kurt. The penalty was no one’s fault but his own but he had spent the rest of the race brilliantly making his way back to the top, only to be done in on Lap 224.
As for the broadcast: I am surprised to find that I like Jeff Gordon behind the mike. There were times when the audio turned to gobbeldygook, however, when the feed from the spotter/crew was being played simultaneously with the announcers’ commentary. Any individual voice was lost. All in all, Jeff Gordon has found a good place, and was a positive addition. This is my opinion, and it is correct.
