Yesterday, I was reading up on unique American cuisine, including Deep-Fried Beer ( Texas ), Deep-Fried Butter ( Iowa ), Deep-Fried Kool-Aid Balls ( California ), Deep-Fried Jelly Beans ( Massachusetts ), Fat Elvis on a Stick [ Peanut Butter, Bacon and Chocolate in Banana Butter, Deep-Fried ] ( Wisconsin ), Deep Fried Sugar Cubes ( Texas ), A Cheeseburger with Deep Fried bacon, Deep Fried Pickles, and Two Grilled Cheeses as the bun ( New York ), etc., which was impressive an’ all; so I was delighted to find a non-specifically American food being honoured by a grateful nation.
The influential NJ.COM, detailing New Jersey culture has an article on this auspicious day, giving more details. I am sure an enterprising lad or ladette could bicycle around the neighbourhood and accumulate 100 free doughnuts in a few hours, enough for the weekend.
