Navigating outside of the lines (long)

Just wanted to get your opinions on an admittedly minor situation, that kinda bugs me.

I walk to the train each weekday. I walk due north, and the tracks run east-west. There is a commuter parking lot immediately to the S of the tracks. I pass the parking lot, cross the tracks, and walk W a short distance to catch the train.

The parking lot features 2 rows of pull-in parking, with through traffic down the center. So the cars parked on the N side of the lot - closest to the tracks - are pulled in facing the tracks.

I walk up the east sidewalk of the street which is on the W end of this lot. The endmost space of the N row of parking spaces seems to be a little narrow. I have never parked there, but it seems to me that it might not even really fit a compact car. Maybe it is not even intended to be a space. The spaces are not numbered, metered or assigned - cars just have little windshield tags and park in any spot available.

In fact, since this end spot is so narrow, more often than not the first car into the lot would skip that spot, and park instead in the second space, because using the first spot would require either jamming in next to the car in the second spot, or parking partially on the sidewalk.

Where the sidewalk passes this lot, it is of the same paving as the lot, and distinguished only by a broad painted white line.

Because the trains board to the west of this lot, the spaces fill up from this street to the east. The later you get there, the further you have to walk.

Gosh, what an incredible buildup over an incredibly miniscule matter. Got an idea on the setup?

All right. Here is what has been bugging me a bit lately.

The last few weeks, a guy in a Lincoln Navigator SUV has taken to parking in this end spot every day. As I said, it might just barely fit a compact car. The Navigator does not fit between the lines. This driver’s solution is to park partially on the sidewalk.

Now don’t get me wrong. This does not prevent me from passing his vehicle. There is still plenty of room to pass by on the sidewalk - at least for a single person. And the area between the crossing and the street is paved, so you could walk there, tho you are closer to the traffic and there is no curb. And, of course, I could cross the street and use the other sidewalk.

But basically, this just strikes me as really rude behavior. It doesn’t ruin my day or anything, but it obviously pissed me off enough to write this endless tome. Why does this jerk think he has the right to consistently block a portion of the sidewalk?

So I was thinking of calling the cops and seeing if they would put a warning or a ticket on the vehicle. Heck, as a resident I’d welcome a little revenue.

I’ve only seen the guy once - on the train coming home. Apparently he takes an earlier train in than me. Tho at the time I passed this a.m., he could have gotten a normal spot maybe 20 cars to the E.

If you did see the guy, would you say anything? If so, what?

I would appreciate your opinions on how you would deal with this admittedly minor irritation.

Just goofing around - to try to make things clearer.

North is to the top. The top line represents the train tracks.
The spot in question is marked with an X.

Guess who doesn’t have too much too pressing to do at work today?!

Oh bloody hell.
This is the best I can do.

At least I found something else to be frustrated about this a.m.! :stuck_out_tongue:

This is the kind of thing that bugs me all the time. It’s a matter of rudeness and fairness. Why does that person think they deserve that space? It would be even worse, perhaps, if the next parking space was partially blocked. This way, at least, no one else parking is inconvenienced.

This relates to the situation where someone blocks traffic trying to turn left. It’s much easier for them to sit there and make you wait, then if they drove around the block. It’s also rude and unfair! Jerks!

Why don’t you put a note on the car yourself?

During Xmas, I went to the Best Buy store. When I came out, some yo-yo had parked his Explorer so close to my Civic that I couldn’t get in the driver’s door (!). I had to get in on the passenger side and crawl over.

I wrote a nice little note and stuck it under his wiper. It said something along the lines of: THANKS A LOT FOR PARKING SO CLOSE TO MY CAR THAT I COULDN’T GET IN IT.

You could put one here which said: THANKS A LOT FOR PARKING ON THE SIDEWALK SO THAT PEOPLE HAVE TROUBLE PASSING.

Ditto on the note suggestion. I’ve done this several times. Plus, since you know it’s a guy and not a little old lady you can make it as “firm” as you see fit.

Sure. Call the cops. Chances are he’s doing something citeable.

Or you could get petty and leave dusty shoeprints all over his vehicle where it crosses the sidewalk.

… says the man who has been known to back his club wagon into parking spaces so that it doesn’t extend out into the traffic lane 4’ farther than any other vehicle, and thus blocking 4’ of sidewalk… if anybody ever complained, I would stop doing it instantly.

My buddy at work suggested I simply wake up a little earlier than usual, plant myself on the portion of the sidewalk in question, and refuse to yield when he attempts to pull in.

Sounds reasonable to me!

I’ll probably do the note thing. Since he does it all the time, I could have them ready to go in my briefcase, and get increasingly snarky when/if he keeps it up.

Isn’t it weird how sometimes the little things bug you more than the big ones?

Or get some paint that matches the lines in the parking lot and extend them onto the sidewalk for him…

Life is too short to let people like this get to you.

Dammit, Rhum. We’re trying to live in a SOCIETY here!

One day parking over the lines. The next, CHAOS I TELL YOU!

I am glad to have finally found my cause, after 42 years on this planet. Let others handle world peace, hunger, disease - the easy stuff. I will take it upon my broad shoulders to dissuade this one individual from engaging in impolite parking.

Over the weekend I’ll work up some ideas for spandex costumes. One thing I know is it’ll have to incorporate a cape!

Honestly, I was with you. Until the art work. The art work, and then the revision! It was just too much man, too much!
