Yes, it snows in Hawai’i … current Winter Storm Warning for the Big Island … wheat them and reap …
Those are mountaintops. It’s not going to be snowing on the beach.
I’ve gone to the top of Mauna Kea. I had to wear a winter coat.
Say what? ![]()
I’ve also been to the top of Mauna Kea. There’s a small lake near the top that was frozen. I’ve also been to the top of Haleakala before sunrise. It was in the 30s F.
Figure 1.5C ~= 3F of temperature drop per 1000 feet of altitude gain over the nearby large-scale surface and the temps down at that surface. In this case the surface is the ocean at (duh) sea level. Haleakala is at 11K+ ft.
This keeps getting reported on the news “Whiteout conditions…IN HAWAII”, and I’ve heard reports like this where they don’t even mention Mauna Kea (or mispronounce it). I am sure there are people out there nervously clutching their plane reservations to Honolulu wondering if they’ll be caught in a blizzard…LOL.
Snow on Mauna Kea is FAR from unusual. There’s usually snow on Mauna Loa in the winter as well.
Also snows on Haleakala on Maui.
