Kewl beans, dude. Glad she dug it.
Thanks for all the further advice, all!
Remember, this is my friend not my SO or anything…and this is her 30th birthday which is why I was getting her anything at all (we don’t usually exchange gifts in our circle of friends due to me being both poor and cheap). So taking her on trips and stuff is quite out of the question.
However, her husband happens to be my OTHER best friend and he is on the hook for every birthday, Christmas and anniversary 'til death do them part so I will be sure to pass these good suggestions on to him!!
And about “making memories”…you are quite right! For Christmas we don’t exchange gifts we just get together and make ugly gingerbread houses so it turns out that doing something fun like this is right up our alley! So I know it’ll be great and I thank everyone for the help!
Remember to take pictures (and post 'em here)!
My daughter participates in civil war reenactments–her character is a laundress/seamstress. So, add me as a strong “second” to going to a reenactment. If you want to have something to open while still saving most of your $50 for the trip and related shopping, this website has some excellent civil war jigsaw puzzles.

You have to search a bit–you’d think they would be under “national & historical”–but my favorite is in the Favorite Artists section. Go figure. The selection changes but I expect one or two are currently available.
as_u_wish, where does your daughter do her reenactment? Baraboo? I’ve been thinking about expanding my wardrobe, and Baraboo is the only place in Wisconsin I know of that does Civil War reenactment.
Yes, yes, history is all about the clothes for me. Wars? Politics? Screw that. I want a hoopskirt.
May I ask a question? My understanding was that laundresses who followed the army were considered to be . . . er . . . of low moral character. To put it bluntly, many novels I’ve read set in that time period regard them as prostitutes.
I’m sure that your daughter must have put a ot of research into this. Am I wrong?
