On Saturday, a group of 14 family members will be at a party in Brewster on Cape Cod that will break up at about 4. We’ll then have a few hours to kill until our dinner reservation in Orleans at 7.
We’ll just want to sit and talk, not do any activities, although if there are things for the kids (about 6 of them) to do, that would be okay. Ages range from about 10 to a spry 85.
I was hoping that my motel in Eastham might have a meeting room that we could use, but no go. Crowding that many into our guest room won’t fly, either, and since it’s a motel, there isn’t even a lobby.
Can anyone who is familiar with the Cape suggest someplace in the Brewster/Orleans area we might go to just hang out for a while? We probably won’t be dressed or prepared for the beach. Outside would be okay (if the weather’s good), but we’ll want some shade and places to sit for most of us. Inside is also okay, and we might be willing to pay a small fee (~$50) for the exclusive use of a meeting room in a hotel or restaurant. But although we might have some drinks, we won’t be eating a meal there.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
Go bowling. It’ll give the kids something to do anyway. Plus you should be able to hang out I would think…
I’m not from anywhere around there, so I’m just shooting off my mouth and googling stuff while I wait on a phone call, but that’s all I could find really. There are some tourist attractions that I found, but none seemed to be what you described (a place to hang for a few hours.)
Nickerson state park might have a place to gather. Also check the Ocean Edge golf club. My other thought was the Cape Code Seashore visitor center at Salt Pond, but they don’t really have a room to gather.
I’m headed to Brewster for all of next week, so I’ll have better answers for you after you don’t need them.
Is there a putt-putt golf nearby?
Just so you know, that will be candlepin bowling. Though it’s tempting to throw the balls overhand like a softball, restrain yourself from doing so.
Missy2U, thanks for the great suggestion! I would never in a million years have thought of bowling, but everyone had a great time, and it killed two birds with one stone. Since the food there was highly rated on Yelp, we bowled for an hour and then had dinner right there.
I wasn’t sure everyone would be interested in bowling, but we all got into it and everyone had fun. The place offered hourly rates, and so for 11 of us on two lanes (kids on one, grownups on the other), we paid a total of about $60 for an hour, including shoes. Great deal! We probably would have paid that much more for dinner at the fancier restaurant we had been considering.
Most of us had never bowled candlepins before. Very challenging. I prefer regular pins, but this was fun for an hour’s diversion.
Thanks again to the SDMB for good advice.
Thanks, commasense, for letting us know how it went. I’m glad you had a good time. Not being anywhere near Cape Cod, there is no information I could provide. I appreciate it when a poster comes back to let us know how it went—especially when it goes well!
I’m so glad it worked out and you all had fun!
Did you use bumpers? Makes candlepin a lot easier;)
