I have an online friend I’d like to play games with. We both have lower-end computers. We’d like an idea for an MMO-style game, with a coop aspect. Think Guild Wars 2 or something, but obviously much lower requirements. Think around the level of Civ IV. I can run Portal, but not Half-Life 2, for example.
Something you can play with a friend or true MMO (lots of people)?
For a full MMO, you could try something older like Everquest. Game’s been around since the dawn of time so even with its occasional upgrades it can’t be all that demanding. They have a free to play model going these days with the usual ability to pay for higher services.
Have you tried World of Warcraft? It got a bit of an enhancement (and probably a boost in requirements) in Cataclysm, but it’s been out for a while now and should run on a machine that can run Portal.
Is Guild Wars I still an option, or did they shut it down in favor of II?
Believe it or not, we’re going with Diablo 2. I’m an old addict, he’s never played. It’s cheap and fun, seems to still be active, and definitely works.
If you feel like screwing around with a low-commitment free to play game, Realm of the Mad God is pretty fun, VERY low-tech, and very quick to get into. “Shoot everything! Don’t get killed!”
Dungeon Defenders is one a friend and I are playing right now. It’s a sort of hybrid of tower defense and FPS, and it came in one of the Humble Bundles, so it can’t be too expensive.
