They have lived there a year. The first hole ‘might’ have been there when they moved in, but the apartment people give the apartment a complete new coat of paint and look for things like that, so it’s very highly unlikely. Especially since after the couch was moved, the hole was a lot more obvious. The workmen noticed it right away.
What’s more, the hole closer to her bed was a new one, it had to have been made in the past two or three days, because it is in a location that is was fairly obvious and she or her friend didn’t notice it before. The first hole might have been there before, but the second hole was made recently.
Holes just don’t appear straight through walls for no reasons. Especially two holes, both of which are in perfect locations to watch someone sleeping from the other room. There are only three people who could have made the holes. Loren, her roomie, or Loren’s friend. Loren’s friend has never been in the apartment while not with Loren so there is no possibility that he made them. Loren didn’t make them, which leaves only one person who could have made them.
I am sure that if the police took more time to investiage, they would be easily prove that her roommate did it. The officer never said that he didn’t believe that the roommate had done it, just that since the roommate didn’t confess, they couldn’t do anything about it.
And the problem with the holes was enough that the landlady was also legally looking for a way of getting rid of the guy. I doubt that the landlady would try so hard to get rid of him if those holes could have been made by accident.

I’d say she’d better leave now. Now the guy knows that she’s suspicious and tried to get him arrested/evicted/both. I’d worry that he might try more dangerous things, depending on how vindictive or crazy he is. Maybe contaminate her food with something? Even attack her?
