Need gift help from a sewing/embroidery Doper

I’m trying to make it a point to send a Valentine’s Day gift to my friend’s little girl every year. This year she got a kitchen set for Christmas that she absolutely loves, and I’d like to buy her an apron.

I was going to look on eBay for someone who personalizes aprons, but I figure I might throw the project out there for a sewing Doper who needs a few extra bucks.

I’d like an apron for a tall 2-year-old, embroidered with her name (Katherine). The apron can be pre-bought or if you want, hand-made.

I have no idea what size apron a 2-year-old wears or where you’d buy one of that size.

Any takers?

I can ask my niece, if you like. She’s 17, has a serger and an embroidering sewing machine, and loves kids.

Pick out some cute cotton fabric you like and a coordinating skein of embroidery floss, and mail it to me and I’ll run it up for you for $5. Or I can walk you through doing it yourself–freehanding stuff like that is really pretty simple if you have the kid or some of her clothes to measure, and no harder use than that would get the no-sew hemming stuff should hold up fine.

And in my experience, kids that age are really into the whole “I made this for you” thing.

Actually, come to think of it, what kids that age are REALLY into is doing things themselves. I think it would tickle her to death if you get the fabric and some iron-on letter or fabric paint and you guys made one together.

I second this idea. My great-niece, great-nephew and I did that last spring. We also traced our handprints and wrote the date on them. We started with the kids’ aprons that you get at the craft store (well, mine was a full sized one) for about $3 each and added about $2 worth of fabric paint (for all three) and had a great afternoon.

It wouldn’t be too hard to hand embroider just a name on one of these aprons as well. Embroidery floss would be under $.50 and it would take about 15 minutes if you’ve ever done any needlework.

I’d love to make one with her, but she’s in Georgia and I’m in Ohio.

I’m a big worrywart and would end up putting all this time into getting the embroidery right and then mess it up and stuff. I’d rather not do it myself.

Isn’t “I’m a big girl and I paid some very talented person to make this just for you!” fun as well?

CrazyCatLady, I saw some patterns in the Simplicity catalog for parent/kid aprons. I would venture to guess that there is a standard kid apron size. If I sent you fabric and floss would you need a pattern too? It’s only $10, so I’d be willing to provide that.

Depends on what kind of apron you want–if there’s a particular look on that pattern that you want, then yeah, do a pattern. But I freehand stuff like that for my niece based on one of her little shirts all the time, and depending on how many drugs the pattern writer had been doing, sometimes that’s easier.

Actually, if you want to do a pattern, Hancock’s is having a big sale this weekend and either Simplicity or McCall’s is $1/pattern. I’d have to dig out my sales flier to say which one, though.

Actually, I had the flier in my email, too, and it’s McCall’s. This pattern and McCall's??tab=accessories&page=2 one would both be on the dollar sale, and their Simplicity patterns are $1.99 this weekend.
