I am looking to update a thread I was posting on a couple days or a couple of weeks ago. The topic was “Should college athletes be paid” but when I put that in advanced search it just searches and searches and searches leaving me with a blank screen and no results… (I chose the title of thread and body of posts search both option)

Did you look it up from your post history or did you use the search function? In other words, was I using the search function incorrectly?
The search function here really sucks. I went to Google and typed in SDMB: Should college athletes be paid? The link to the thread was right near the top of the front page.
As cochrane said, using the board search function is pretty much the same thing as using it incorrectly. See this thread about how to do searches of the board with Google. And here’s how you can add it as a bookmark to do it even faster.
