Need Help identifying this British Independant Film?

Ok plot outline.
Late 1990’s film set in Britain.

Young Lady in a very religious community in Britain falls in love with an oil workerand marries him. He get’s a nast head injury and is temporarily paralyzed from neck down. He tells her to go out and have sex with other men because he will never be able to do that with her again. She doesn’t understand but does it anyway. She goes completely mad, and ends up being killed and raped. Only to have her husband come out of being paralyzed and being completely fine.

Anyone know…

Something like
" Wind in the Waves…"
“Tides … dreams …”

I really don’t know. If anyone knows I’d love a link…Thanks all.

Ok, my grammer completely went out the window as did my spelling in that post. Nothing knew for those who know me. Anyway, I wrote it quickly…If you can get past that, I need your help.

Breaking The Waves starring Emily Watson.

OH MY GOD!! Thank you sooo much!!

Now anyone who has seen it want to weigh in on it? Anyone know the religion.

Irish Catholic, I believe. Boy, that was a strange flick, huh?

I felt so sorry for her, being of “unsound” mind and all. There was a deep sadness AND a creep factor all stirred together in that movie.

I agree it was really odd. I can’t decide if it was genius or lunacy or a nice mix…the making of the movie that is, not the intellect of the poor girl.

Say what? The film was set in the north of Scotland. The church in the film was supposed to be an oddball Calvanist sect restricted to a single town in Scotland.

According to this review:

Lars von Trier, the director/writer, originally planned to set the film in Denmark. He had a particular Danish sect that he was going to use for the church in the film. When he moved the setting to Scotland, he had to change the sect slightly to make it fit Scotland.
