Hi, all. Second-day n00b here. Been trying to post replies, quoting multiple earlier posts in one reply. I see others are doing it, but I can’t get it to work for me. Am I clicking something when I should be clacking? Here’s how far I get:
(1) I see the FAQ, where it says:
(2) I click a few multi-quote buttons, and they all turn red. So far so good?
(3) I click on “Post Reply” button. New EMPTY edit window pops up, with NONE of the selected posts quoted there.
(Is that something you admins enable or disable on a per-discussion-area basis?)
What am I missing here (other than a few brain cells)? Please be gentle with me for my blatant stupidity, I only have 40 years of Programming/SysAdmin/DB/Networking/Linux exp. (really! Well, sort-of), so I need all the help I can get!
Edit: And where is my signature line? I was sure I had at least that working . . .
No, that didn’t work either. Doing that, only the last one I chose appeared quoted in the new edit window (the one that I clicked the “Quote” button on), and the others did not appear.
(n.b., note that the two messages quoted above in THIS reply, I did one of those “manually” with old-fashioned cut-and-pasting. You can tell, because the first of the above two quotes looks different.)
Exactly! That’s just what I did to create THIS reply. I click the + button (the one with the double-quotation mark and the + sign on it, right), and it changes from blue to red. I can even make SEVERAL posts have this button in red all at once. Then I click the “quote” button of another message, and only THAT one gets quoted. Is there some configuration setting I need to set in my profile to enable this? I couldn’t find one.
BTW, are you seeing my signature lines? I’m not seeing my own sig lines, but I may still need to fiddle with that.
Only paid members can enable a signature line in their profiles to display when they post. We guests can’t. We have two alternatives. You may type a signature line in your post. Or you can join up with a full membership. Now would be a good time in fact, since the membership price has been lowered to $10.00 for the weekend.
JS in ENabled. I am using Firefox 3.6.9 on Ubuntu Linux box.
It certainly works for doing other JS-needful tasks, like paying my bills on-line
Think maybe I should try it using IE on a Win box? (The latest Win I have is XP.)
I suspect that with JS offed, this site would probably be far more dysfunctional (and far more obviously so) that what I’ve seen so far. Just for grins, I’ll play with that someday RSN.
Don’t know why it’s not working for Senegoid, but I use the multiquote button for all I want to cite, the use the post reply button as well.
Actually, I copy the post reply button, paste that in the URL of another tab, then open the edit window there. So I can keep the thread to refer back to. YMMV.
If I open the reply window, then decide I wish to quote someone else before I’ve started editing the reply, I go back and hit that multiquote button, then repaste the reply button link and reopen. It will add that new post to the reply text.
If I’ve already been writing the reply, then I’ll just manually quote to save rewriting.
Huh? My sig shows up fine below. From my point of view it works like it has for a long time: you have to check the “show your signature” box EVERY TIME.
This just in! I tried multi-quoting, using my old Win XP machine with Firefox 3.6.8 and it works just fine. But when I use my Linux Ubuntu machine with Firefox 3.6.9, it doesn’t work. Go figure. Any ideas anybody?
Interesting that it can keep track of the order you clicked them.
Now there’s a thought. I’ll have to try that too. Sounds handy.
Oh, and I’ll try clicking on “show signature every time” too. Thanks, rowrrbazzle
I was going to start a thread about multi-quoting not working for me but I guess it’s not necessary.
For me, all multi-quote options are defaulted to +, so it should be on already, but it never works. Seeing the post above about Javascript gives me an idea. I’ll test something, and if it works, then I’ll have some advice for Firefox users.
Edit: Nope, that didn’t work. When I hit Reply I only get the very last quote in a post. There was a short time when multi-quote worked for me, but for a long time it hasn’t.
