Need help with Italian translation

I’m considering having one of my granfather’s sayings made into a tattoo, and I need help with the translation into Italian. What he used to say was “the first fifty years are the hardest, after that, life is easy”. I’ve tried a few of the various online translators, and what most of them come up with is “i primi cinquanta anni sono il più duro, dopo il quel, vita è facili”. Is this accurate?

Does the Italian adjective *duro * mean hard (as in difficult), or hard (as in not soft)?

No, nouns and adjectives have to agree in number and gender.

Further a word for word translation does not sound at all Italian.

No. Suggested translation:

I primi cinquant’anni sono i piu’ duri, ma dopo la vita e’ piu’ facile.

Not a literal translation. I put “piu’ facile” (easier) to have the simmetry “piu’ duri”/“piu’ facile”.

I notice you used an apostrophe to represent an apostrophe, and then later to represent accents. I believe those should be grave accents, correct? “più” and “è”, right?

Yes. I was in a hurry and not of a mind to fiddle with Unicode, but there they are. For your interest, an Italian proverb you might want to adapt, as it says something similar:

La vita comincia a quarant’anni.

Translation: Life begins at fourty.
