Needing *Missing You* songs

Hey guys,

I need to come up with the “end-all” songtrack for my gal-pal who’s hubby is serving in Iraq. It is their anniversary this weekend and I want to make her a great, beautiful soundtrack list.

I have a few tracks picked out, but I defer to you to make the most meaningful, stunning tribute to her marriage as possible.

PS: I have an extensive CD catalog and any others I do not have will be PURCHASED.

So, I seek perfect “I am away and loving and missing you” selections.

Love you guys.

I guess it all depends on what type of music the husband/wife likes, but here you go…

Leavin’ On A Jet Plane – The Denver original is lovely, but I recommend the Bjork cover.
Missing – Everything But The Girl. Might be too dance/techno for what you’re wanting.
Kiss The Rain – Billie Meyers
Wild Horses – The Stones
Air That I Breathe – Simply Red is nice, but I recommend the k.d. lang cover.

I’m tapped out. I’ll try to think of more and post again.

16 Days by Whiskeytown, from the album Stranger’s Almanac

Can you use mp3s? If so, this is a beautiful heartfelt song about missing a lover. It’s a demo song that she never properly recorded with final instrumentation, but it still sounds good, and it says everything. This kind of song, lyrically, is very unusual for her, which is probably why she never recorded it, but I like it a lot.

Happy Rhodes - Miss You

I have permission from Happy to share her music and lyrics.

Here are the lyrics:

Miss You

Sweet love, my joy
Powerful man, beautiful boy
Oh how I miss you now Darling
Won’t you come home, I’m all alone

While you sleep my precious thing
I think of all the passions you bring
Oh how I need you now Darling
Will you come back to me, I’m lonely

Your eyes are kind, your smile is warm
Your hands are strong, your heart is warm

Little child, my man
You give me hope whenever you can
Oh how I miss you now Darling
Won’t you come back to me, I’m lonely
Won’t you come back to me, I’m lonely

We love you too dude… um girl… hon.

I recently stumbled across a wonderful, hauntingly beautiful, gut wrenching song. It’s actually more of a “get your ass over here” song, than a “missing you” song.

To Me by Denise Lisenby. You can download it for free, from Amazon.

Not knowing what type of music your friends listen to, and being aware of the dynamic of one of the spouse’s being deployed overseas, and knowing therefore that any of the following might be totally inappropriate, I submit for consideration:

You Make Me Live by Isaac Hayes from the album Raw & Refined
Summertime Rolls by Jane’s Addiction from the album Nothing’s Shocking
Together by Ohio Players from the album Fire
You’re Always The Sun by Supreme Beings Of Leisure from the album Supreme Beings Of Leisure
The End Of An Act from the soundtrack album Team America: World Police
Can’t Get Enough Of Your Love, Babe by Barry White from the album Can’t Get Enough
I Only Want To Be With You by Barry White from the album The Icon Is Love
Baby’s Home Barry White from the album The Icon Is Love

I know that’s 3 tracks from Barry White (I’m a huge fan, what can I say?) but if you have those tracks, give them a listen in the order I have them… it could make a helluva closer.

Oceans Apart - Richard Marx

When Will I See You Again? by Babyface. Do yourself a favor and find the accoustic guitar version. Great frickin’ song.

Gah, yes. I need to get that again, thanks for mentioning it.

Into My Arms-Nick Cave.
Perfectly expresses the desire to be reunited with the one you love.

“I don’t believe in the existance of angels
But looking at you I wonder if that’s true
And if I did I would summon them together
And ask them to watch over you
To each light a candle for you
To make bright and clear your path
And to walk like Christ in grace and love
And guide you into my arms”

It’s one of my favourite songs.

How did you miss the Stones’ generic “Miss You” song–namely, “Miss You”?

:smack: I have shit memory, that’s how.

I’m wondering if any of the, for lack of a better term, “tribute to a woman” songs might work? For instance Melissa and Jessica by the Allman Brothers, Angie by the Stones, Beth by Kiss, Roseanna by Toto, etc?

I nominate Time in a Bottle by Jim Croce.

Also, Tina Turner did a remake of the song by that guy from the Babies…called Missing You…I know the lyrics are “I ain’t missing you at all…since you’ve gone away” but if you listen to the rest of the lyrics, she’s clearly in denial.

**Don’t you forget about me ** by (I forget)

Against all odds Phil Collins

Walking after midnight originally done by Patsy Cline, great cover by Garth Brooks.

Cry myself to sleep Wynnona Judd

Always something there to remind me (softcell?)
Am I blue George Straight

This is a good idea, can I interject another theme for possible future Cd for your friend? (Cause Missing you Songs can really drive a stake through the heart at certain times and a gal needs upbeat songs every once in awhile.)

How about Upbeat love songs.

Ring of Fire Johnny Cash.
Walking on Sunshine Katrina and the Waves
Addicted to Love
I’m a believer…then I saw her face by Smashmouth
Best years of our lives Baha men
Shrek 1&2 soundtrack Cause I have kids and wuv it. And especially hauntingly beautiful Hallejuah by rufus Wainwright.

Or just perky little toe tapping songs in general.
Shrek 1 & 2**
The Proclaimers have a couple good ones, though my CD is MIA and lost forever.

Come one Eileen Dexy’s Midnight runners. [size]One of the best band names evar!

Bad bad leroy brown Jim Croce
Or even a theme of War (uh!) what is it good for? ( Cause I just wuvs the remake on 99 Love Balloons by Lustre. I mean complete love, baby and I think everyone should love it as much as me.) And Patriotic-ish songs.

What’s going on? Marvin Gaye.
American Pie Don McClane. Which is practically our national anthem.
God Bless America Kate Smith
Star Spangled Banner Jose Feliciano.
Oh Beautiful Ray Charles Is da man!
Imagine John Lennon
All we are saying is give peace a chance John Lennon.
Or, you could just get the wonderfully addictive compliation of the Greatest Songs from the 80’s ( like ME!!!111!!!) and never outgrow your desperate desire for one hit wonders and cheesy hasbeen bands!

Just a thought.

Shirley, that band would be Simple Minds.

Yes, that is it. Thanks!
Sidebar: I Forget would be a great band name. Think about it.

SheDaisy has a recent hit tailored for just this occassion - Come Home Soon. The video features husbands, wives, parents and children of military personel overseas. Sample Lyrics:

“Come Home Soon”

I put away the groceries
And I take my daily bread
I dream of your arms around me
As I tuck the kids in bed

I don’t know what you’re doin’
And I don’t know where you are
But I look up at that great big sky
And I hope you’re wishin’ on that same
bright star

I wonder, I pray

[Chorus:]
And I sleep alone
I cry alone
And it’s so hard livin’ here on my own
So please, come home soon
(Come home soon)

I know that we’re together
Even though we’re far apart
And I’ll wear our lucky penny 'round my neck
Pressed to my heart
[Bridge:]
I still imagine your touch
It’s beautiful missing something that much
But sometimes love needs a fighting chance
So I’ll wait my turn until it’s our turn to dance
[Third Chorus:]
I walk alone
I try alone
I’ll wait for you, don’t want to die alone
So please, come home soon

World Wars I and II had some great “missing you” songs:

World War I:
There’s a Long, Long Trail
It’s a Long Way to Tipperary
I’ll Be with You In Apple-Blossom Time (re-recorded in WWII)
Keep the Homes Fires Burning

World War II:
You’ll Never Know
I Can’t Begin To Tell You
I Don’t Want To Walk Without You, Baby
I’ll Be Seeing You
It’s Been A Long Long Time
Spring Will Be A Little Late This Year
We’ll Meet Again

—Most of these are available on cassette or CD online.
