I guess it all depends on what type of music the husband/wife likes, but here you go…
Leavin’ On A Jet Plane – The Denver original is lovely, but I recommend the Bjork cover.
Missing – Everything But The Girl. Might be too dance/techno for what you’re wanting.
Kiss The Rain – Billie Meyers
Wild Horses – The Stones
Air That I Breathe – Simply Red is nice, but I recommend the k.d. lang cover.
I’m tapped out. I’ll try to think of more and post again.
Can you use mp3s? If so, this is a beautiful heartfelt song about missing a lover. It’s a demo song that she never properly recorded with final instrumentation, but it still sounds good, and it says everything. This kind of song, lyrically, is very unusual for her, which is probably why she never recorded it, but I like it a lot.
Not knowing what type of music your friends listen to, and being aware of the dynamic of one of the spouse’s being deployed overseas, and knowing therefore that any of the following might be totally inappropriate, I submit for consideration:
Into My Arms-Nick Cave.
Perfectly expresses the desire to be reunited with the one you love.
“I don’t believe in the existance of angels
But looking at you I wonder if that’s true
And if I did I would summon them together
And ask them to watch over you
To each light a candle for you
To make bright and clear your path
And to walk like Christ in grace and love
And guide you into my arms”
I’m wondering if any of the, for lack of a better term, “tribute to a woman” songs might work? For instance Melissa and Jessica by the Allman Brothers, Angie by the Stones, Beth by Kiss, Roseanna by Toto, etc?
Also, Tina Turner did a remake of the song by that guy from the Babies…called Missing You…I know the lyrics are “I ain’t missing you at all…since you’ve gone away” but if you listen to the rest of the lyrics, she’s clearly in denial.
This is a good idea, can I interject another theme for possible future Cd for your friend? (Cause Missing you Songs can really drive a stake through the heart at certain times and a gal needs upbeat songs every once in awhile.)
How about Upbeat love songs.
Ring of Fire Johnny Cash. Walking on Sunshine Katrina and the Waves Addicted to Love I’m a believer…then I saw her face by Smashmouth Best years of our lives Baha men Shrek 1&2 soundtrack Cause I have kids and wuv it. And especially hauntingly beautiful Hallejuah by rufus Wainwright.
Or just perky little toe tapping songs in general.
Shrek 1 & 2**
The Proclaimers have a couple good ones, though my CD is MIA and lost forever.
Come one Eileen Dexy’s Midnight runners. [size]One of the best band names evar!
Bad bad leroy brown Jim Croce
Or even a theme of War (uh!) what is it good for? ( Cause I just wuvs the remake on 99 Love Balloons by Lustre. I mean complete love, baby and I think everyone should love it as much as me.) And Patriotic-ish songs.
What’s going on? Marvin Gaye. American Pie Don McClane. Which is practically our national anthem. God Bless America Kate Smith Star Spangled Banner Jose Feliciano. Oh Beautiful Ray Charles Is da man! Imagine John Lennon All we are saying is give peace a chance John Lennon.
Or, you could just get the wonderfully addictive compliation of the Greatest Songs from the 80’s ( like ME!!!111!!!) and never outgrow your desperate desire for one hit wonders and cheesy hasbeen bands!
SheDaisy has a recent hit tailored for just this occassion - Come Home Soon. The video features husbands, wives, parents and children of military personel overseas. Sample Lyrics:
“Come Home Soon”
I put away the groceries
And I take my daily bread
I dream of your arms around me
As I tuck the kids in bed
I don’t know what you’re doin’
And I don’t know where you are
But I look up at that great big sky
And I hope you’re wishin’ on that same
I wonder, I pray
And I sleep alone
I cry alone
And it’s so hard livin’ here on my own
So please, come home soon
(Come home soon)
I know that we’re together
Even though we’re far apart
And I’ll wear our lucky penny 'round my neck
Pressed to my heart
I still imagine your touch
It’s beautiful missing something that much
But sometimes love needs a fighting chance
So I’ll wait my turn until it’s our turn to dance
I walk alone
I try alone
I’ll wait for you, don’t want to die alone
So please, come home soon
