Netscape / TDWaterhouse problem

Hello all,

Last Thursday I tried to access my account at TD Waterhouse, but my browser (Netscape Communicator 4.7) kept crashing every time I tried to bring up the login page. I tried a few more times over the weekend, and I’m still getting the same “this program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.” message. I have been able to log in from my computer at work, however, with Internet Explorer.

Have any other TD Waterhouse customers been having problems, or is it something with my software? Since the last time I logged in (early October) I’ve installed a download/upload program for Scour Exchange and Winamp 2.65, although it still crashes even when neither program is running.

Does anyone have any advice on what the problem might be, and how to fix it? I’d like to avoid installing MS Internet Explorer on my home PC if at all possible. As for calling Waterhouse’s help desk, their toll-free number isn’t toll-free from overseas, and I’d rather not pay $50 just to listen to their ‘hold’ music for 30 minutes, although I will if I have to.

The vital stats for my computer are listed below.

Thanks in advance,

–sublight.

Gateway 2000 P5-120
Pentium 120MHz processer
48MB RAM
OS: Windows 98

Try some basic cleanup on your PC. Clear your cache directories in Netscape and delete anything out of your c:\TEMP or c:\WINDOWS\TEMP folder. Sometimes this can clear your problems.

Beyond that a re-install of Netscape might be in order. Sometimes programs get unstable (for a variety of reasons) and a re-installation may clear up your troubles.

FYI: Just because another program isn’t running doesn’t mean it can’t screw-up other programs. Many programs use shared components and occasionally programs will install their own version of a shared component. If another program had its own particular version it may crap out when it sees the ‘new’ file on your PC. A re-installation may fix this.

I’m also a TD Waterhouse online-bank-using-guy, and I’ve never been able to use Netscape to access it. In fact, I think I read somewhere on their site that Netscape is currently incompatable with it. IIRC, I think it had to do with security issues.

I hate to tell you this, but you need to use MS Internet Explorer. I keep a copy on my hard drive for exactly that purpose.

Sorry to bring you the bad news! Hopefully it’ll change once Netscape gets around to releasing 5.0

Thanks, I’ll give that a try. I think the new software has caused the screwup somehow. I’ll see if uninstalling it makes a difference.

Whoops, sorry Anamorphic, I didn’t see your message when I posted.

I dunno, I’ve been a customer ith Waterhouse for just over a year now, and I’ve had no problems logging in with Netscape until just this weekend. Still, if it has to be Explorer, then there’s not much I can do about it (except try using Linux again).

Thanks,

Wait, seems I might not have been totally correct. Visit http://www.tdwaterhousebank.com/128bit/. Sounds like you need to download the 128bit encryption version of Netscape to get it to work with TD Waterhouse.

Hope that helps and makes you happier than installing Explorer!

Dave

You could try getting IE5 too. I always suggest using both of them.

Also, in Netscape you should turn of java, javascript, styleshts, etc. Then try again. This can often happen because of java.

Sublight, assuming you have W98, hit start:Run; then type in SFC in that little box & let it search your computer to make sure the W98 files are okay.
