Never too early for a fantasy football league

Just set it up, we have a month to tweak the details. Let’s get it config’d.

League # 288412

League name: Prolate Spheroids

Password: cecil

Come one, come all. Just not on me, please.

Yahoo Fantasy Football League

Seeing as how I have yet to not join an SDMB fantasy league upon which I’ve stumbled… OK.

What Jimmy said.

What Kiros said.

Count me in.

Capn, to this point desparate for a non-keeper league

I swear I had no idea what Jimmy Chitwood’s league ID was when I signed up. If I’m lyin’, I’m dyin’!

My team name was originally going to be “Not a Whizzinator Joke,” since I expect about a third of all fantasy football teams will be named in honor of that apparatus this season, but it was too long.

Besides my regular league, I joined an SDMB league last year, in which I promptly got owned.

Not sure I’ll join this year, as I’m trying this

Only for the hardcore. Which is why I will promptly get owned in this one, too.

But by God it looks like fun.

Since I sunk to the bottom of the keeper league too, I think I’ll spread out a little more.

Welcome Hermit’s Hermans to the league, and despair!

Bottom-feeders rejoice, for the biggest homer in the history of fantasy football has joined the league. Cannon-fodder would be a charitable assessment of my team.

Same as last year, I’ve named my team Ellis Dee for easy identification until after the draft, at which point I will change it to my real team name.

Rules I like:

1 point = 1 point (6 for TDs, 1 for XP, 3 for FG)
40 yard FGs = 4 points
50 yard FGs = 5 points

Receiving yard points = rushing yard points, and position is ignored.
Passing yard points = running/receiving yard points divided by 3.

Fumble = -1
Fumble lost = -3 total
Pick = -3

One bench spot for every starter, but I realize this is unlikely and don’t terribly mind smaller benches.

Snaked draft, except I pick all my guys first and then you guys do the snake draft. (The truly sad thing is this probably wouldn’t affect my roster; I doubt many people want the guys I want.)

just curious, but you’re saying that passing TDs are to be worth as much rush/rec TDs?

I’m flexible on that; I didn’t know passing TDs were independent of rushing/receiving in the yahoo scoring system.

I’d be cool with half credit for passing TDs…3 points. (Or whatever.)

I just ranked all my players…I’ll be shocked if I don’t get every single one. I have (IIRC) only two guys in the top 50!

Anyway, the roster page is making me nervous. A few questions:

Are we using defensive players? (I’m all for it; just curious.)

And are there no bench spots?! Is everybody on the team active every week? If that’s the case, I’m gonna get slaughtered during bye weeks. (But really, is that such a departure for me?)

I counted 4 WR spots plus 1 WR/TE and 1 WR/RB, but only 2 dedicated RB spots. This seems odd to me, especially if everyone will be active.

I forgot to bitch about the fact that a RB I really want on my team, and the guy I planned to put in the WR/RB slot, doesn’t exist in Yahoo. Those dirty rat bastards! (And a CB I want doesn’t exist either.)

Anyway, in giving it a little more thought, ideally I’d like 10/10/30 to be the yardage for a point in rushing/receiving/passing, and if you can set passing touchdowns independently, then 6/6/3 for rushing/receiving/passing TDs. (The “3” being whatever a pick is worth; since a pick and a TD are equal value in the passer rating formula, making them equal in fantasy points makes sense to me.)

With such a low threshold for yards, it would keep the more the much more random TDs in check. (I’m flexible, though. These are just my preferences.)

And, of course, fractional points are a must.

My old league with Yahoo was a free league (so unless they changed much) almost all of those options are commish preference (though I think some scoring is locked in). I doubt that it would be full roster every week.

Ah, cripes, who am I kidding…best to let duffer answer.

I’m in and ready to go.

I’ve got my own FFL, but I just wanted to ask this hijack question:

Let’s say you have the #2 pick and L. Tomlinson is off the board (to me the only choice for #1), who do you take?

For the first time in my life, I would consider taking a QB in the first round, but Peyton is that solid and there is no real #2 consensus pick.

Alexander getting into camp helps, but he fumbles a lot.
Priest is wonderful, but fragile.
Edge is about the same.

Who goes #2?

I don’t think I’d be willing to take Manning second. In a ten-team league, that means you take a serious risk of not getting a single top-tier running back. You have to figure that, other than running backs, only two receivers and Culpepper are going to go between your first and second rounders. That means… um … 14 or 15 running backs are gone. You’d really have to get lucky with which backs dropped to you in order to stand a chance. I guess if you could pull a Julius Jones and a Brian Westbrook at 2 and 3, you’d be OK, but I don’t think I’d chance it. Which doesn’t answer your question. Personally, I’d probably want to take Edge, but end up with Alexander because he scores so damn much.

ED: Jacobs and Webster? Or Justin Miller? They might not be in there because they haven’t signed, or in Jacobs’ case because they just signed recently. They’ll be there.

I agree. Even in an 8 man league, you’d miss out on that first tier RB.

But the problem I have is figuring out who the top tier RBs are anymore!

This year, I’d love to have the #8 pick!

Jacobs and Webster, obviously. Jacobs looks to “pull a Bettis” this year, and Webster is reportedly a pick machine. Then again, Gibril Wilson is a “proven” pick machine, so on defense it’s not quite as annoying…I’ll be seriously peeved if I have to take Derrick Blaylock.

Hopefully you’re right, and they will be added within the next month. The 'fanboys will be much better simply for having a better pre-draft ranking. I think I took Pennington with my first round pick last year. Doh! Well, in my defense, I truly knew nothing about fantasy at the time. I think I have enough material to field a halfway decent team this year, armed with the experience of how not to draft.

Even still, my pre-draft rankings would likely cause a seasoned FF player to gouge his own eyes out. heh. I don’t care; my loyalties will once again be pure and true come football season.
