Freaking Shader 2.0 required on video cards… swears a little bit

I guess I REALLY have to upgrade sooner rather than later, 'cause this is the second thing in a row that I want to play but can’t because of my oldie-but-goodie GEForce4 Ti4200 (…which, other than the shader issues, performs as well or better as most of the 5000 series… :()

Heck, I wound up upgrading my old GeForce2 (from 2001) earlier this year just so I could play freaking Civilization IV. What is the world coming to when a 32 MB video card can’t handle a Civ game?

I’ll be somewhere in the middle of the requirements. I won’t be able to play it on the highest settings like I can NWN, but I’m not sure what the highest settings really get me anyway, other than eye candy.

I had a similar problem a few weeks ago. Back when I learned about it (2002ish?), there was basically little to no internal difference between 2k and XP. Things may have changed, but I dunno.

Software started having “only compatable with XP, if you continue to install this on 2k, we won’t support you” and installed and worked - I’m thinking this “XP only” trend where they won’t install might be a similar trend. That the games would actually run on 2k, but they don’t want to have to do the testing/support to find out, so they just block it from being installed.

I eventually just caved in and got XP and run a dual boot system for certain games. But the idea occured to me - maybe you could install the game in an XP virtual machine with vmware, and then run it regularly in win2k?
