New and Unimproved Workplace Rants

Good thing, huh?

It took me several tries to see what I did wrong. This is what I get for saying something about their grammar.

Late Friday afternoon I attempted to open a 3D model on my computer, and was informed by the software that my license was no longer valid. No big deal, since I was aware of others in my department who had issues with their AutoDesk licenses after the upgrade to Windows 10…so I went to check in with my manager. It turns out that our new AutoDesk subscription is only for AutoCAD LT – no more Inventor LT. :rage: I asked him how I’m supposed to handle 3D models now; he said I could contact someone at another location and ask about converting the file. WTF. Yeah, I was pretty much the only person who used Inventor LT…but I was still using it, dammit!!! I have several big projects that are no longer accessible now because I can no longer open the files.

As for the file I was trying to open…I downloaded it from the manufacturer’s site to my home computer, where I was able to open it and convert it to the appropriate format. It looks like I could subscribe to some of AutoDesk’s software on a monthly basis; I’m seriously considering finding out what would happen if I submitted an expense report for the use of this software for a month or so.

Dear New (Asshole) Manager:
Please figure out the schedule more than Last-Minute ™.
I’m beyond tired of waiting until middle of Sunday afternoon to find out if I’m working Monday morning or not.
Especially when I’m off weekends.
Not to mention, being unable to schedule any appointments in advance like a grown-up adult.

My last job was nothing but potheads, including management (hey, it was a dispensary) and holy shizzznit we got our schedule a week or two in advance.

They got their shit together - can’t you?

We don’t sell weed here (well, not officially - what happens in the walk-in cooler, among friends, stays in the cooler) so maybe scrape yourself together and cough up a goddamn mutha-fuckin’ schedule - that doesn’t make me think of those days, turning in a college essay at the last fucking minute - every goddamn week.

Would you like one of us to print this out and mail it to your boss, from our zip code which is definitely not yours and with my fingerprints on it, which I have reason to know are not on file anywhere?

Just offering. Got some postage stamps going to waste here.

Sorry @BippityBoppityBoo i was a bit cranky

And with good reason! That would drive anyone batty. It’s like your whole life is supposed to revolve exclusively around them and all you have to do is to wait breathlessly to be called into work.

Maybe you and your co-workers should have a meeting in the cooler and make up a schedule and just post it.

That’s a great idea! If your dumbass procrastinating boss asks who put it there tell them “Dunno. Must be from regional management because none of us did.” Let him look like an idiot trying to figure it out.

Oh I love this, sounds like a reddit story in the making.

Clearly that train has already left the station.

I haven’t laughed this hard in a long time. I lurves y’all.

I work in county gov GIS. 30 years now. We have been given state wide excellence awards. It’s a really good system.

But another department that we take care of with this data, and has no complaints has decided to farm this out. For them. The person that decided this is elected and pretty much untouchable.

Was GIS consulted about this?
Nope, just found out.

Will this company require a shit ton of data?
Oh yeah.

Do we know what they want, or how this is to be delivered?
Not a clue.

Who? What? When? Where? And Why?
No idea.

This company says they can do it in 2 months (haahahahhahh). My boss (a good guy) that has worked here for 37 years is retiring in a week. And 2 weeks later I’m going on an long overdue 3 week vacation that has been planned for 2 years. The vacation is on my Wife’s bucket list.

What pisses me off most is that GIS/IS was NEVER consulted. WTF?

Some think that you just start the car and it goes “It’s easy” with no consideration to the millions of things that are going on in the background to make it all work.

I see a lot of email and call forwarding to the person that pulled this trigger in my future. My bosses boss said to do that.

I’m just pissed off. I have a few more years to retirement, and feel sorry for my coworkers that might be forced to use it. I will keep my system up and going.

What a mess.

Would it be a stretch to think an elected someone is good buddies with the company that the task was outsourced to , and now there is an additional cost to the local taxpayers as the work was already covered by your team ?
Or just common or garden “All you need to do is” thinking by people who don’t like the answer “It will take longer than you think” to a problem.

Enjoy the vacay with your good lady and try not to let this BS live in your head when there, which is tough to do when you actually give a shit about the work and your coworkers.

It’d be very handy if you could send out a pre-vacation email ("Here’s what’s going on/what’s coming) and casually mention “Oh, and check with Joe Jablotznik with any questions. We just found out that the place we’ll be at has no WiFi/cell phone coverage.”

Not a problem! They will just be told by the elected doofus 'Work smarter, not harder", and other assorted bullshit that they learned in their 4th tier “management school”.

And when the new system crashes and burns, the low-level employees will catch the blame.

< Talking Heads > Same as it ever was.

I don’t think there is any corruption here. My co-workers and I are on the same page and I will be able to help when I’m on vacation. But not much. I’m not taking a laptop that would have any sort of connection or reference to our servers. No way. Dangerous, and well, no way.

The lap top is for my wife and I really.

We found out about this just 3 days ago. Myself and a coworker are looking into it, even though the trigger has already been pulled.

Document, document, document.

Oh yeah. “All you have to do is…” is a bona-fide running joke at work. Day shift management giving a turnover to afternoon shift. They’ve already told their boss that it’s basically done and in the bag. Mind you, the actual guys involved in the task will freely tell the incoming shift the truth ( “it will take longer than you think” ), both being experienced, but this gets brushed aside in favor of BS that sets up the next shift for failure. Aaannnd…

Bingo.

Once the company sent around some feel-good “road-show” ( read: dog & pony show ) asking us what we think and under the guise of actually giving a damn what we think, much less act upon our suggestions. During this feedback, a certain key figure, who sets the culture detailed above was complained about. Their response was a chirpy “Oh we’re very happy with his performance”. Really? You get fed a steady diet of what you like to hear…and you like it? Startling revelation, that.

I am peeved. As. Hell. It’s a teeny, tiny workplace rant, but it still belongs here.

One of my employees sent me a meeting invite for a discussion with a client for this morning. Not a big deal, but she sent it at effing 1 a.m. on a Friday morning while she was out of office. This meeting has been on her damn calendar for well over a month and she never once bothered to look at my own calendar to see if I could make it. Now I’m in a quandary: explain to my boss and her boss why I ditch our discussion today (it’s just the three of us) or say no to the account manager and their client. The meeting is a “meet and greet” on the phone, so in theory that shouldn’t be a big deal to move, but clients are the people who pay us.

Now, I’m self-aware enough to know this shouldn’t piss me off as much as it is. It’s a minor irritant, but I’m pissed for a few reasons - we talked about her lack of respect for others’ time during her review a weeks ago. We also talked about the fact that she doesn’t need to be online at all hours of the day and night (especially when what you’re doing is pretty much just participating in recreational outrage). Also, it’s not fair to trash talk others for not working as hard as you are when I never fucking asked you to do that. It’s not healthy and it’s not helping anyone. It’s obnoxious and creates a terrible working environment for everyone else.

Anyway, my boss has been trying to get me to manage her out of the org for over a year, and the fact that she’s pulling shit like this even after a mediocre review where she was explicitly told, “Hey, don’t do this,” is getting on my last damn nerve.

Well, tell the boss and maybe it’ll be “getting on [his/her] last damn nerve” too.

Yeah, I think this lady has gone beyond that. It’s been allowed to fly under the radar for a really long time because she’s been really good at her job - but her job, and only her job and she stays very strictly in her lane to the point of unhelpfulness. She’s pissed that she didn’t get a promotion, so has decided to “teach everyone a lesson” by only sticking within the confines of her job until she gets said promotion, but she doesn’t understand that that’s her problem - and why she hasn’t gotten a promotion. Also, that isn’t how promotions work. I’ve explained to her multiple times that you demonstrate the competency first, then you move up the chain. That’s just the way it works in our company.

Anyway, she’s mad at me now that I didn’t cover the discussion for her (after asking the account manager repeatedly what I needed to do to cover and getting zero response, I just declined). I probably could’ve relatively easily - both my boss and her boss are really understanding - but unless it’s an emergency I don’t generally shit all over my own calendar. She’s not responding to any of my emails or messages. I hope she calms down before we have The Talk; she’s only adding fuel to the fire at this point.
