Holy donkey balls. This may be a chaotic post; I’m coming off the tail end of a string of very long irk shifts that seemed to involve … ya know what? Murphy’s Law. Doubled.
(For background, I work at a BBQ joint, which includes smoker pits so the irony is … more delicious than our food, sometimes. It’s a corporate chain, not a mom’n’pop store.)
One of the worst parts is, a lot of the B.S. today didn’t - or shouldn’t - impact me directly. Circus; monkeys, yanno?
But it threw so many people off their game, and effed up so much physically around the store, that my ability to do my job(s) was tanked.
Plus everyone was stressed, so extra pissy drama, yadda yadda.
Okay, so, I’m trying to climb up from hourly whatever slave to someone who’s at least somewhat in charge. (In a retail, customer service environment. Yeah, I know … )
I started the day so excited (they gave me keys! imma open all by myself and prove my worth!) and as soon as I pulled up my heart already sank. Then I walked in, and woah! W.T.F and it went downhill from there.
Sorry I gotta do this in parts. I’m processing, and don’t wanna lose too much as I go.
I’m being given more & more responsibility (good!) but zero additional money (bad!). I want to prove myself, but I feel like - since upper management knows I work my tail off - I’m being taken advantage of & it’s starting to affect my attitude.
Big update to all computers this week. IT is way understaffed, so response time for help tickets is going to be long. That’s fine, I can get by in the meantime. But the drivers for multiple monitors are gone, and I have to work with a single screen. I tell you these are inhumane work conditions.
Well it didn’t actually happen to me because my computer isn’t on the update schedule anymore because it’s too old. My replacement is still pending, going on 7 months of waiting. But at least there’s one bright side for me.
Pretty much all of our drafting is computer based now, but we have a handful of drawings that are still updated by hand for reasons that have never been explained to me. I always practice before revising one of these drawings, and it was nice not having to spend half the morning tracking down supplies.
Agreed! And I thought things were bad when the previous cleaning crew would bring in their kids and let them run loose in the building…
Yes! In the current thread in IMHO about lost-lasting reliable products, Brand names that have a reputation for long lasting goods , at least three people have posted about their 50+ year-old Tot Swingline staplers! (Maybe you were one of them?)
So the response I got was that raises this year are going to be good (like 5% range). And they are working on a new level for people like me which if approved will go into effect July 1 2023.
Which really boils down to nothing. I am eligible for the raise whether or not I do management work so that is meaningless to the pay vs responsibility issue. The second half is a rousing “Keep at it! Maybe next year!”
I’m a mechanical engineer working in Dedication Engineering – we create procedures for testing and inspecting commercial parts for use in backup diesel generators in nuclear plants.
Very interesting. I’m in GIS. Property lines, roads and such get updated a lot. And it’s available on the internet to anyone. Everything is digital for me except very old records that we don’t update.
Dammit! I need to do some things tomorrow, and I finally figured out how to make it all work around a meeting that’s at a very inconvenient time. And then this afternoon I found out that we’re doing a department bonding activity, so my plans are all ruined. There is no way to do lunch. I’m not mad that we’re doing a nice department thing, but I really would like to have some actual food for lunch.
Nice! Most of our stuff is proprietary, but some of the engine lines we build/support are really souped-up versions of what you might see in certain locomotives.
We have surprisingly few foreign customers. Fukushima Daiichi wasn’t one of ours either (it’s my understanding that they had great generators, just not in the best location).
