…continuing the redesign of Canada’s paper currency.
It will go into circulation in March. It was announced early to educate retailers and the public about all its new nifty security features.
Maybe this means retailers will actually accept the things again? Seriously, most small shops, fast-food places, etc (but not grocery stores for some reason) have signs up saying that they do not accept $100 notes because of fear of counterfeiting.
I wonder whether the arrival of the new note will make as big a difference as it might have thirty or forty years ago. With the rise of (in order) cheques, credit cards, the national debit-card system, online banking, and then email money transfer, using banknotes to transfer large amounts of money between individuals seems to be becoming rarer.
I haven’t had a hundred-dollar bill in my hands since I was paying the rent at university, twenty years ago. The vast bulk of my payments of a hundred dollars or more are by cheque, by online bill payment, or by debit card. Merchants can get away with refusing the hundred-dollar note because most people don’t pay amounts that large by cash anyways…
It looks pretty cool though. I plan to get one for my father as a housewarming present when he moved into his new place.
It looks pretty neat. I’m still partial to the new 10$, and I rarely have ever held a 100$, but i’d like to get my hands on one just to examine it myself! The one I’m looking forward to, though, is the new 20$. THOSE bills, I always have on me thanks to the ATMs, and I can’t wait to see how they’re giong to modernize it.
I’d be surprised. Around here, most places don’t accept anything bigger than a $20.
Larger establishments like grocery stores and department stores will take big bills, but places like Walgreens, McDonalds, Denny’s and convenience/liquor stores don’t.
They always try to make the people on notes look noble, or intelligent, or handsome, or some such thing.
I’m just wondering - when they re-design the $50 note, how are they going to make Mackenzie King look like anything other than a rotund, pudding-faced little plop?
[hijack]New Canadian Dollar Bills? Damnation! I am going to Canada in April and I’ve still got 40 Can$ from my last visit in October 2000. Is that money I still have now invalid due to the new bills?[/hijack]
