New Canadian $100 banknote!

…continuing the redesign of Canada’s paper currency.

It will go into circulation in March. It was announced early to educate retailers and the public about all its new nifty security features.

Maybe this means retailers will actually accept the things again? Seriously, most small shops, fast-food places, etc (but not grocery stores for some reason) have signs up saying that they do not accept $100 notes because of fear of counterfeiting.

I wonder whether the arrival of the new note will make as big a difference as it might have thirty or forty years ago. With the rise of (in order) cheques, credit cards, the national debit-card system, online banking, and then email money transfer, using banknotes to transfer large amounts of money between individuals seems to be becoming rarer.

I haven’t had a hundred-dollar bill in my hands since I was paying the rent at university, twenty years ago. The vast bulk of my payments of a hundred dollars or more are by cheque, by online bill payment, or by debit card. Merchants can get away with refusing the hundred-dollar note because most people don’t pay amounts that large by cash anyways…

It looks pretty cool though. I plan to get one for my father as a housewarming present when he moved into his new place.

It looks pretty neat. I’m still partial to the new 10$, and I rarely have ever held a 100$, but i’d like to get my hands on one just to examine it myself! The one I’m looking forward to, though, is the new 20$. THOSE bills, I always have on me thanks to the ATMs, and I can’t wait to see how they’re giong to modernize it.

Neat. I especially like the “jigsaw 100” where the pieces of the number only fit together when you hold the bill at the correct angle.

I suppose I’ll see a few if I go to Casino Niagara after March. Not that I’ll actually be holding one, mind you, but I’m sure I’ll see them around.

I’d be surprised. Around here, most places don’t accept anything bigger than a $20.

Larger establishments like grocery stores and department stores will take big bills, but places like Walgreens, McDonalds, Denny’s and convenience/liquor stores don’t.

Then how the heck does your economy work!? Twenty Canadian dollars is about $0.17 U.S.!

Works fine. $20 of our dollars exactly equals 20 American dollars.

Hmmm. I’m interested in these. Can you send me some?

I reckon I could use a whole pack.

It’s a nice bill. Like many yanks, I don’t know much about Canadian history. Who is pictured on this new note?

Robert Borden, Prime Minister from 1911-1920.

Well, it’s just a matter of time before they come into common use with inflation, maybe in, say, 60 years.

And besides, what are drug dealers supposed to do? Carry around big bricks of 20s? Do business with a bank and leave a paper trail? Sheesh!

(BTW Borden’s on the old 100, too).

Looking at the new notes I wonder why they put the “EURion Constellation” on the $5 and $10 but not on the $100.

On this page: Bank of Canada - Banque du Canada I like how they mention that “in the absence of light, the watermark is not visible”. no shit!

<pulls out $10 note and looks at it in puzzlement>

“EURion constellation”?

EURion Constellation"

So the colour photocopier looks for that specific arrangement of dots to decide not to copy? Interesting! I had no idea.

<looks closely at a ten>

Yep, they’re there!

Learn a new thing every day…

They always try to make the people on notes look noble, or intelligent, or handsome, or some such thing.

I’m just wondering - when they re-design the $50 note, how are they going to make Mackenzie King look like anything other than a rotund, pudding-faced little plop?

Mmm, then i suppose this $100CAD bill I traded a $20USD for with Red Green on it is another counterfeit?

[hijack]New Canadian Dollar Bills? Damnation! I am going to Canada in April and I’ve still got 40 Can$ from my last visit in October 2000. Is that money I still have now invalid due to the new bills?[/hijack]

Fascinating. So that’s why we have those funny spots on the back of the new US twenties.
