New cat hiding in the house

I got a cat from the humane society many years ago. When I first brought her home, she didn’t hide, she wandered around, exploring, and seemed reasonably at home.

Ten years later, when I moved, she immediately crawled under the covers of the bed and stayed there for four days. But she eventually came out, and is happily at home in her new home.

I wouldn’t worry about the lack of sound from your cat, but I agree with those who are saying you should talk to him. I don’t know if this is really true, but I read somewhere that the classic “meow”, two-syllable sound is only made by cats when humans are around; it’s really their way of talking to us. I mean, look at it from the cat’s point of view: If these giant creatures are constantly making sounds to you that you don’t understand, what are you going to do? Make sounds back at them. But if the giant creatures are mostly silent, why would you even try to “talk” to them?

This is what I’ve heard. “Meow” is a cat’s attempt to imitate human speech.

I’ll start with “meh” and work from there.

Casey is loving his perch in the closet and I figured I might as well make it comfy for him. He’ll wander around at night.

Wow, when Casey comes down from his perch, he definitely wants to be around me. He starts out quite hyper. And he likes to bite a little so I’m keeping my hand away. But after about 20 minutes, he seems to have mellowed out.

He was following me all over the place and was quite fascinated to watch me in the bathroom. He must have thought “He’s standing and urinating!”

Now is the time to get toys for the cat. Most cats are quite happy to play with shoelaces, but you might want to see if he likes to chase things like fur toy mice, balls that jingle, laser lights etc. Visit your local pet store and choose two or three different kinds of toys. Then when the cat comes out in the evening and wants to bite you, play with him a bit with the toys. Biting = play to young cats.

The meowing stuff is also perfectly true, IME. We have two cats. They yell at us all the time (especially at meal times or when they want to play with us), but they never meow to each other. One of the cats (the shy one from the shelter) didn’t meow at all when she first came to live with us, and seemed rather startled when we meowed at her. She saw the other cat (the stray who simply adopted us out of the blue) meowing back at us, though, and after a month or so, she learned the trick herself. A wonderful thing at 6am on Saturday morning.

I say be damned glad he isn’t meowing.

Typical convesations chez twicks:

Cat: Meow!

Me: Hush!

Cat: Meow!

Me: Hush!

Cat: Meow!

Me: Hush!

Cat: Meooooooooooooooow!

Me: Huuuuuuuuuuuuush!

Cat: Meow! Meow! Meow!

Me: Hush, hush, hush, you noisy animal!

Lather, rinse, repeat.

To sum up, Casey has become a full member of my household now and he has turned out to be a wonderful cat. He likes people and he is quite agreeable. I think his previous owner must have treated him well because he’s so well-behaved.

I do need to keep him out of my breakfast cereals in the morning.

He still uses the closet to sleep in during the day but I put his bed in there.

Allright!
Sounds like it’s time to post some more pictures of Casey, OK?

has a couple new ones.

Oh, he’s a handsome little thing!

He is handsome - really interesting colour and markings.

BobT, that is a really handsome kitty-boy!

He’s beautiful. He looks like the color of champagne. Ear scritches from me.

He’s such a pretty kitty! Congrats to both of you for your new friendship–may it be long and happy!

Thank you. He still uses the bed I made up for him in the closet when he goes for his midday “nap” of 12 hours or so. I think he refers to it as the penthouse.

Over 2,200 views. Dopers sure do love kitties.

He is beautiful! Give him a scritch at the base of his tail from me- my Luna loves tail-scritches.

If he ever disappears again, check the box spring of the bed. That’s where my cats get to when they want to hide. They both have ripped a hole in the bottom covering of all the box springs on all the beds, and crawl in there to sleep.
It’s like a hammock once they’re in. Damn things.

Oh, and Casey’s beautiful.
