New documentary on GWAR on Shudder

It appears that the new GWAR documentary is released on Shudder July 21st

We’d only ever seen a couple of videos of them when they played over here, I think it was maybe 7-8 years ago, and we went to see them. Great fun, and we knew not to stand anywhere near the front. Seen them a couple more times before Covid hit. Nice to see the crazy stuff coming in a documentary.

Talk about “are you old?” I’ve never even heard of these people. I don’t know how I could avoid any knowledge. Maybe I’ve transported in from a parallel universe.

I love GWAR. I miss Dave Brockie, though. Not that Blöthar the Berserker hasn’t filled in admirably.

They’ve been around since the late 80’s! So it’s not because you’re old. You haven’t heard of them because they aren’t exactly “mainstream” or “family friendly” entertainment. They’re aimed at that little niche where D&D nerds and metalheads overlap.

As a nerdy metalhead myself, I first saw them in college in 1993, and 28 more times since. I met Dave Brockey at a random rave in Hollywood. He was playing with his punk band in the other room. He was super chill. I was super bummed when he died.

And as much as I’d love to see this documentary, I don’t think I can make myself sign up for yet another thing just for it.

Then parallel universe it must be.

I can’t see how otherwise I couldn’t have known anything about them. I’m stunned at the hole in my knowledge base,.

If it helps, if you’ve ever seen my avatar, that’s the lead singer Oderus Urungus (aka Dave Brockie)

I like their, uh, ‘Animal’ song.
