I watched all Big Three networks fall Previews, and here is what I liked: Forever. (The did this before in New Amsterdam, let’s hope this one lasts.)
Houdini- watched and was great! NCIS- NO.
Maybes: Constantine. Gotham Gracepoint.
Looks stupid: How to get Away with Murder. (Law students can do almost nothing IRL) Intruders (watched epi1, and was confused and bored) Marry Me ( the female lead was so fucking annoying in the preview it was amazing) The Mc Cartheys. State of Affairs. (no way Katherine Heigl can carry this off.)
I had no interest in seeing Kate Walsh’s Bad Judge until I saw her in the Fargo TV series. If her character is at all like Gina Hess, it could actually be good.
Two sad commentaries on US TV:
There are way too many shows that are Homeland/Scandal/House of Cards ripoffs. I’m reminded of the scene in Network where Conchata Ferrell is pitching shows to Faye Dunaway and they are all basically the same (and similar to the latest hit shows of the era). That was 1976.
The dearth of interesting new network sitcoms. When was the last time an non-formulaic (Community or Louie) sitcom of any value debuted?
Being a fan of Happy Endings (and as someone who feels it was canceled way too soon), I’m actually going to give Marry Me a shot. It’s by the same creator, I believe, and an early review of the pilot basically called it “The Year of Penny 2.”
Most def. Gotham. Cannot wait.
Black-ish looks racist as hell. (How dare the mixed race wife have opinions on living black?)
Red Band Society might be interesting.
The very concept of Jane the Virgin is ludicrous. I hope they address the unethical lapses by the doctor who is responsible for the very idea of implanting an embryo into a woman who has never had sex.
Gracepoint. Of course Gracepoint.
The McCarthys sounds offensive. The gay stereotyping is repugnant.
I’ll try Constantine, but I have doubts.
Red Band Society looks like the glurgiest pile of shit since grandma’s last Christmas newsletter.
Hulu has the pilots for Selfie and A to Z streaming. Selfie isn’t terrible, but I honestly can’t see it being appointment TV. I’d watch it if there was nothing else on. A to Z is laughably bad. If it lasts more than a few episodes, I’ll be shocked (then again, the execrable Dads made it a whole season, so what do I know?).
Mysteries Of Laura-Mysteries of who let this shit on the air. Two children finding amusement in pissing on each other in public is not what I want to see on a detective show.
Scorpion was so bad I was cringing. It doesn’t help that I have passing familiarity with what they were attempting to do, but I think anyone could recognize the stupidity.
Well said. You’ve captured my feeling on that show perfectly.
As big a fan of tv as I am, I don’t see anything new on the networks that I’m interested in. I’ll give any sitcoms a chance if it’s sandwiched between other sitcoms I already watch, but I don’t expect that to last more than a couple episodes before I start cutting them out of my DVR scheduling. Marry Me is the only one I’ll make a point to sample.
I liked the movie Constantine quite a bit, so I’ll give the show a try, but my impression is that it will be a big steaming turd.
None of the other new shows appeal to me at all. I think I’m still traumatized by Extant to the extent that it’s hard to shake the feeling that “network” automatically equals “bad.”
The parallels between this and New Amsterdam made me think both had the same creator and he somehow wangled another shot at the idea. Both feature an immortal who died for inarguably noble reasons and was resurrected but doesn’t know how or why, living in NY with a retirement-age sidekick they raised from childhood.
NA wasn’t given a chance to find it’s footing, but I’m hoping Forever gets a shot.
