The photo iPod looks pretty sweet, if only just for the color screen. However, $500 is a serious chunk of change, and thanks to Slacker 2.0 on the way in March, there’s no way I’ll be getting one of these.
And the U2 version? I applaud the effort but that thang is fugly. Maybe without the red wheel. I’ll just have to wait and hope the rumors of an orange iPod are true.
Also, iTunes has been updated today. There are a few little things that are new; the main update that I noticed is that you can now minimize the program to the system tray (you know, like every other MP3 program has been able to do for 5 years).
Oh, and iTMS had at least a minor update too. You can now request email notification of any new songs from artists in the store. Nice!
I think the idea is that it’s the digital equivalent of storing your photos in your wallet. The fact that you can store full-sized images and show them on a TV (with the composite video cable) offsets the small screen size.
(My PDA only has a 320 x 320 screen, but it does photos very well.)
Too bad you can’t get a 60GB version without paying $100 extra for the photo features. Then again, I wonder how much the new 1.8" 60GB drive costs Apple compared to the 40GB ones. It could be more than $100.
That’s what people said about the iPod mini being only 4GB, and $50 less than the 15GB version. Still, they couldn’t make them fast enough. The popularity of the iPod, in all its forms, defies standard marketing logic.
I would buy one just for the 60GB drive + Apple design and interface, then I see in the specs the iPod Photo only has 17 minutes of skip protection vs 25 on the normal iPods. What a screw up! One reason I want a larger HDD is so I can rip songs at much higher bit rates… with larger files I needed more skip protection, not less!
