Since I retired out of Volvo Cars I have been futzing around looking for a permanent position. I did some consulting, and have been working with a buddy of mine, running his shop.
Anyway I have been talking to one of the large nearby dealers about a shop foreman’s position. Due to the econony, and the fact that they have this boat anchor in the position, that is all it has been, is talk.
Anyway, last Thursday I got a call from the Service Manager (my contact). He told me he was leaving (got a better offer), and he told his boss that if the company had any brains at all, they would hire me as his replacement. He even went so far as to set up an interview with the general manager.
All I could say was “Is there any other opinions or anything else I should know?”
Anyway I kept the appointment, and talked with the big boss for about 1 hour.
Today they called back and hired me.
I am completely gob smacked over this. I thought I might someday make a SM after being a shop foreman for a few years, nope I am skipping right into step 5 from not even being on the board. This is awesome.
I had to take a drug test this afternoon. I hope they grade on the curve, because I didn’t have time to study first. Or as my son said, looks like I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue.
w00t! Starting Friday, I will be the service manager at one of the largest Volvo dealers in Southern California.
The only down side, is that it will cut into my doping time while I learn the job.
Yay!! Congratulations!
Is this the one that stood you up on Saturday?
Yes, but he had a good reason, the freeway was closed due to the fires.
No harm, no foul.
Congratulations. Wishing you luck and joy in your new career.
Hell yeah!
Yay!
Bully for you! I’m sure in a couple of months they’ll realize how lucky they were to get you.
I’d wish you luck, but I know you don’t need it. Skill and planning smoke the chrome off luck every time.
Kewl! That means that at the next Dopefest, you’re buying!
First round anyway.
Huzzah!
I’m pretty sure this is karma, mister!
Rick, sorry to bust your bubble, but the invaluable advice you give to us on the board does not count as consulting.
:p:D
Good for you, man, it’s cool that it just kind of fell into your lap like that!
I’m applying for a new job now, myself, and it appears that things are looking good. Let’s hope I’m posting a similar thread in a month or so!
No honest, I got paid for some consulting.
I was just looking for context.
Good for you!
Good luck, Rick!
Just remember, the Policies and Procedures manual and Warranty Administrator are your friends.
Pie
(Former Warranty Administrator)
excellent!
congratulations!
A good warranty admin rocks!
As far as policies and procedures go, proceed until apprehended, and then beg for forgiveness.
Cool, congrats! I love my volvo, but I’m in the market for a new car in 09 hopefully.
[shameless plug] Feel like driving a few miles north to buy it?[/shameless plug]
It’s 5:30 ish, and I’m off to see what the future brings.
