Randy, me thinks that if you dont want to be banned, or in the least, flamed worse than a stolen car, methinks you should keep your opinions on Gays, Abortion and Capital Punishment to yourself.
We are not tolerant of all opinions here at the SDMB. For example, we will not tolerate hateful opressive speech. Even if you squeeze it past the mods (which, there is no chance of, BTW) the rest of the board will tear your arguments apart just for shits and giggles.
“OK Computer” and “The Bends” are two of the most musically fantastic albums to come out in the last 10 years. The lyrics, I agree leave something to be desired, but they are not bad.
If you doubt this, go get “The Bends” and listen to “My Iron Lung.” This is a great song – well constructed with a great sonic structure and masterly performed. Now, let me tell you that the album cut was recorded live.
“Kid A” may be pointing the direction of music to come for the next 10 years. I believe without a doubt that Radiohead will be viewed as this era’s Pink Floyd.
Oh, and if you want good rap, then recently I’ve been listening to a lot of The Roots, A Tribe Called Quest, and Wu Tang. These guys stay away from the gangsta stuff mostly. They are also incredible rhythmically. Rahzel from The Roots also does the most incredible Human Beatbox that I have ever heard.
Also the Beastie Boys are well versed on both straight rock and rap and stay clear of all denigration of women.
Oh sure, now they do. But back in their early “Brass Monkey” days they were not like that at all. In fact their “No Sleep Till Brooklyn” video featured a bikini-clad blonde gyrating in that 80’s video bimbo sort of way. Remember how they wanted “girls to do the laundry”? I’m not sure that song was entirely tongue-in-cheek. Maybe it was, but I do recall one account of the early BB.
The drummer for the BB back in the day was Kate Schellenbach, who went on to play the skins for the now defunct (don’t remind me :() but consistenly funky Luscious Jackson. IIRC, it was Luscious Jackson, who were signed under BB’s label Grand Royal and asked to tour the second stage at Lolapalooza, who really expressed their disaproval with the BB’s protrayal of women. Only then did the BB really start to show the ladies of LJ, and women in general, some respect.
Thats why music journalists were amused when the formerly fratty BB suggested that their concerts should have a female-only mosh pit so nothing sketchy happens to female concert goers.
Personally, I agree with what Beck said in a concert a couple of years ago. Moshing went out of style in 1994.
Twisty, will you marry me please? I have to pledge undying love to any man who says “shits and giggles” like my best friend’s Irish mum. It is, no doubt, the funniest phrase in the history of the world, and makes me laugh like a banshee every time I hear it, you sexy Irish boy you! Thank you!
Umm…back to the OP.
Randy - I suspect your last post was directed at me, since I attacked you last. Please note that I am not at all intolerant of your musical tastes. I am simply asking that you not be so bigoted, rude, and narrowminded when you hear other forms of music that people legitimately enjoy.
As for the comments about gold chains, I cannot comprehend how you could possibly post that. You know, the government decided that it was wrong to discriminate against people due to their appearence, their race and their sex long ago. Maybe you should catch up. Such a blanket statement is ridiculous. Oh yeah, all rockers rip their shirts off, break guitars, and trash hotel rooms. No, that’s just Iggy Pop.
Please read some actual posts before you type anymore. More people might respect your opinions if you didn’t just pull them out of your asshole.
Did TwistOfFate just threaten me up there? Ah darn…I thought I was done with this whole mess, and I should let it go. But you know, I’ve made it through this whole thing without calling anyone an ahole, colossal ahole, dumbass, or old and stiff, and it’s kinda wearing on me that I’m not getting the same consideration. Nacho4Sara, do you really think I have an issue with gold here? It’s not the appearance of the gold that bugs me, it’s what it represents. It’s the arrogance of it, the cockiness of it. You know, “look how much gold I got on”. It’s the attitude. BTW, Dylans album is “Time Out of Mind” not “time on my mind”. And you may find this hard to believe, Im not pulling ANYTHING out of my backside, It’s all out of my heart baby, try it sometime. You know what’s weird though, and I think I got you guys on this one, four people have told me if I don’t like Rap, turn it off. Don’t listen to it. Some of you have posted repeat messages to me, you know, more than one. Get my point here? See the hypocrisy? If you don’t like what Randy is saying, turn him off, take your own advice, and don’t listen to him. The same thing that compells you to comment on me, compells me to comment on the thing I don’t like but apparently, your opinions all mean something, while mine means I’m an a*hole. As far as “getting respect” on this Forum, respect from this bunch isn’t high on my priority list right now. I’m done. What’s the next topic Woodstockybird?
You start a thread in which you denigrate a very popular style of music, and then you turn around and act surprised when you don’t gain any friends for it. That’s just brilliant. I mean, listen, if I started a “steelworkers who live in Indiana are dumb motherfuckers” thread, I wouldn’t be terribly surprised if you weighed in with some nasty remarks. Because I WOULD HAVE BEEN ASKING FOR IT. You were asking for it. If you wanted a reasoned debate, you shouldn’t have opened it up by asserting that the other side has no talent. That’s not how reasoned debates work.
To sum up, them’s fighting words – and you got a fight.
I was offering you a little advice. If you think that this discussion is heated, I do not recommend starting a threat about your opinions on Homosexuals.
Assuming that your opinions would be derogatory, I can guarentee the following results
Start the thread in any forum aside from the Pit, and I guarentee the following results:
Arguments torn apart within 4 posts, before being either a)closed or b)sent to the pit in anticipation of the inevitable flamefest.
once in the pit: the claws come out in here, randy, and few people hold back. Asbestos underwear recommended.
This is not a threat, randy. Just think of it as a friendly smack upside the head for being an idiot.
Your Sideways cap toting, Faux Gold wearing homey,
Twisty.
Not much in the way of stamina eh? Hate to be your wife…“sorry dear…I know I just put it in, but I’m tired”
**
Boo fucking hoo…then don’t post in the pit you old and still colossal asshole dumbass fuckwad.
**
you have yet to explain what this has to do with rap… that’s like saying that you don’t like rock because of the big hair, while completely ignoring the fact that only certain rock bands have big hair and most of them went out of style years ago.
**
yeah…I’ll give you that…your attitude is pretty obnoxious.
**
hmmmm. Like implying that all rappers wear sideways hats…or that your horn sounds better than rap…yeah
**
yo mama?
**
NO…The difference is you’re complaining about an art form…saying other people shouldn’t enjoy it…we’re pointing out that your and ingorant dumbfuck who wouldn’t know culture if it snuck up behind you and pulled a 12 foot long string of anal beads out of your sphincter.
**
Yours get no respect because you have no idea what you’re talking about…IF someone comes up and starts shouting that modern art sucks, I’ll pay them no attention…or if I’m feeling friskey I’ll insult them.
If an art history student makes a critique about modern art and they know what they’re talking about, I’ll carry on a reasonable discussion with them.
Bang on! Radiohead’s latest offering is absolutely something that challenges you to listen to music in a new mode, and those who can’t take up the challenge will be left behind.
I feel that most of the really interesting artists today are working in the field of electronica, blending old world music sensibility with the unavoidable digital future. Take for example Air, Dimitri From Paris, The Chemical Brothers, DJ Shadow, Thievery Corporation, Groove Armada, Moby(!!!), Stereolab (again !!!), Fluke, Underworld, Tricky, The Dust Brothers, and Beck’s magnum opus Odelay. These artists are paving the way for what musical historians will see as the modern equivalent of jazz: a new genre which totally reinvented the face of modern music.
hijack from flaming Randy. Not that this belongs in the Pit, but I find it interesting, and much less of a waste of time than flaming someone who obviously will not change.

For the record, Stereolab is for my money the best band out there right now. They have been cranking out an album a year since like 1991. I own all their stuff and I’ve seen them twice. Air, Beck, Moby, Tricky, Massive Attack, Portishead, and Dmitri from Paris are all on heavy rotation over here.

The Beasties released a first album. It was huge in an early-20s-frat rock kind of way. They began to reinvent themselves on Paul’s Boutique and continued to do so consistently. They matured, as did their sound. “Fight for Your Right to Party” has changed into “Free Tibet” and “We should be outraged about sexual attacks at Woodstock '99.” I believe that they are wonderful examples of how to avoid being chewed up and spit out of the music industry as a “gimmick” group or a one-hit wonder.
I’ll agree with “Send in the Clowns”, but I defy anyone to dismiss the pure unbridled POWA of Xanadu. ONJ has it goin’ on, yo!
And I’m not sure what your point is about Ricky Lee Jones. She is pretty awesome. Hell, even the Orb liked her enough to build a whole song around her. Not to mention Dan Hicks.
Public Enemy had just as a strong social commentary as any Bob Dylan tune. I’m a fan of both. Many “rap” bands out there have a far more positive message and engaging musicial form than other so-called “rock” bands. Take a look at “The Disposable Heroes of Hiphopricy” and compare their message with that of “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan”. They both discuss powerful issues, and neither should be dismissed out of hand. Just because one is “new” to you, doesn’t make it bad. Public Enemy was a lot more insightful on many subjects than Bob ever could be. They are both valid.
I agree. I like BB. I’m just saying that they weren’t always as hip to social ills. And Luscious Jackson had a lot to do with that. Crimony, I miss them.
Yes, the Beasties are genre defying artists who take the edgiest aspects of modern music, and blend them into one unified entity that makes you want to dance your ass off while promoting positive messages. Now tell me, how can that be bad? Sure, they’re not the most original group to have ever come along, but the manner in which they blend the music to which they are paying hommage is what makes them unique. Eminem will be long gone and forgotten in a few years, and the Boys will still remain…mark my words. Shock value NEVER lasts.
Me too. I was a big fan of theirs from the first time I saw “Daughters of KAOS” on MTV’s 120 Minutes. I saw them in concert at least four times, always at small clubs. Every album of theirs was better than the one before.
As far as “new music” in general goes, there’s lots of good new music for everyone, no matter what you like. Most of my taste runs along the power-pop (Cheap Trick, Raspberries, Big Star, and all their progeny) line, and I never have trouble finding interesting new bands to listen to.
